For any photographers who are interested, I had the following email sent to me from the team at http://www.africapic.com . I took a quick look and there were only two bodyboarding photos in their library. Would be cool to see that improving.

"Africapic is their African partner and any photographer from Africa wishing to submit images to this agency should do so by submitting their labelled images to Africapic.com"

"Africapic feels that this is a fantastic opportunity for its photographers to promote their work within the Eurozone using the distribution network of one of Europe's largest agencies."

"Submitting images to the PA is optional. Africapic will contact any photographers for permission BEFORE it submits any of their work to the PA. This partnership is an added benefit of joining the Africapic photographers network."

1.0 About The PA (Picture Alliance)

The Picture Alliance (or PA) is one of the leading image distribution agencies in Europe (and globally), and has extensive media distribution outlets throughout Europe, as well as in Asia and North America. Their image library contains over 7 million images and they are looking to develop and grow a large collection of African themed images. There has been a growing increase of publicity about Africa and with the upcoming World Cup in 2010, this is set to increase. In light of this, the PA has contacted Africapic to set up a partnership to handle the concommitant demand of African themed images.

Many photographer's have heard of the American based media giant "Getty Images." The PA is Europe's equivalent.

    2.0 The Partnership

Many of Europe's leading publishing houses and advertising companies are clients of the PA and we at Africapic feel that it is in the best interests of our photographers to allow the PA to distribute our photographer's images within their strong network of existing clients.

Our partnership with the PA is non-exclusive, in that the images we supply to the PA can be sold through other agencies as well, including us. This means that Africapic can still sell its images to its clients in Europe, with the PA being an additional avenue with which to distribute the same images into that region. We do have the option to supply certain images on an exclusive basis. Obviously, these images will receive greater promotion by the PA due to their exclusivity. Photographers will need to inform us if they would like to supply images on an exclusive or non-exclusive basis, the default being non-exclusive unless stated otherwise.

    3.0 Which Photographers are Eligble

The PA is a Rights Managed agency and thus only Rights Managed images will be considered.

    4.0 Image Requirements and Labelling

The PA requires high res JPEG's with a minimum longest side dimension of 3500 px. Thus, images for our Editorial gallery would also be acceptable.

Africapic will only accept properly labelled images.

Images must include the following IPTC labels:

    1) A caption - describing the image.
    2) Keywords - 5-25 accurate keywords.
    3) Headline - a title for the image.
    4) Location - country, province, city.
    5) Byline - the photographer's name.

If you require any additional information on IPTC labels, please view the photographers section.

Images with recognizable people will require a completed model release. Only images with an attached model release will be considered for images with people in them (A model reease is available in the photographer downloads section). Images of objects with trademarks will also not be accepted. Thus, you will be required to remove any trademarks from the images using photoshop.

    5.0 Pricing & Commissions

The PA is a rights managed library and thus their pricing depends on the use. Many of their images are sold for 100 Euros and there are instances of larger uses for large European corporates where the usage fee is in the thousands of Euros. Thus, it depends on the usage.

Africapic will share the proceeds from the sale after the PA has taken its commission in the same commission structure as it normally would with the photographer. As labelled images are being supplied, the photographer will normally receive 50% of the proceeds after the PA has taken its commission. This is standard within the industry for such partnerships.

The photographer's account will be credited with any amounts owing on a monthly basis.

    6.0 How to Submit

Submission is easy. Photographers are to submit their labelled images to Africapic in the usual manner. Either by DVD or by EHD (External Hard Drive). Africapic will then process the images and submit the images it feels appropriate to the PA.

    7.0 Images Required

Due to the size of the PA, they require images from a range of different themes. Their client's vary from editorial magazines to large commercial corporates and thus the required images vary. The best images to supply are generic corporate images that can be used multiple times. Each image needs to be unique. Thus, images from slightly different angles will not be considered for submission.

If you have an excellent collection of images, we have arranged for the PA to do a special promotion of any themes we supply them. Thus, if you have 200 excellent food images, the PA will promote these images across their network.

We are urgently looking for some classic stock photography of white caucasian people with model releases. South African's look very similar to European's and model released people images are extremely popular, especially for commercial uses.

We are also systematically building up a 2010 gallery. Soccer is an extremely popular theme within Europe and thus, any soccer related images are often in need.

Please send an email to photographers ( at ) africapic.com (with subject of PA Submission), outlining any galleries that you may have.

    8.0 Conclusion

We at Africapic are excited about this great opportunity for our photographers. As our partnership with the PA develops, this will benefit photographers by increased distribution of their work and awareness. We are looking to handle the commissioning of specific projects for the PA, yet this in still in the pipeline.

We at Africapic feel that submitting images should be extremely easy and that by using our usual submission methods coupled with our increased distribution network through the PA, selling your images is easy. We will handle the marketing of your images, leaving you the photographer the time to focus on the production of excellent images!

    Kindest Regards
