You see us Durbanites dont use those things. (wetsuits, not keys)

ok, I used to drive a Citi Golf so tying the key to my wetsuit zipchord was fine...

but now I have a car with an electrical key (remote unlocking device) and zipchord is now a practical problem for me...

So what do you do? Anybody else have this problem?

Can't really leave it on my wheel as that's pretty much saying "Hierso poese kom steel maar lekker my kar..." and the insurance man will laugh at me as my claim gets REJECTED!!!

for the record, 99% of board shorts come with a key cord in the pocket.
Like JMO said, key pocket in wetsuit.

With electronic keys, I go to the key-cutter recommended by the dealership, and get them to cut a non-electronic copy for me, which I use to get in and out the car, and then I hide the electronic key in the car - generally somewhere difficult to reach for someone breaking in via one of the doors, i.e. the boot (but not in your kit, because then if they steal that, you're walking home!).

Ja, reckon that is about the safest. A mate of mine had a mini and it came with a plastic non-electronic key which he would put on a string around his neck and under his suit.

If anyone is keen on a waterproof wallet - we have the following at F7, it is designed to fit in your boardshorts pocket and if you have a key string in the pocket you can secure it to that to make sure even if the velcro is ripped open that you'll not lose it.

hahha now i am waiting for the day when i read floris bitching that his car was nicked while he was surfing. Dude, thats the dumbest place to put your keys ever. It not about anybody seeing you do it, its about skollies checking those two exact spots when you are in the water.

Kelly, somehow i just dont trust that, definatly not with my cellphone.

    wetsuit, keycord / pocket compartment.

boardies in durban, used to have it in my pocket attached to that little cord, careful though as got eaten up once at cave rock and somehow decided to rip my pocket / key etc...surf was good so worried about it after i got out ;)

never leave it anywhere near or in your car unlocked think its a stupid idea personally.

if you in durban either put a key ring through the leash plug rope if you think its strong enough and dont have issues with that and clip it on.

the other main thing i do in warmer water if possible use shoe laces for fin saves, thread it through the shoelace and tie a double knot. if good shoelace knot will never come undone only when you untie it and should never snap either.

if you goto more deserted beaches, take a towel and thread it through the corner of the towel and stash the towel but somewhere you can check from the water. owes arent really phased about scoping towels only and you have time if you see someone going for your towel as they still have to find the car etc ;)

I saw a stand up putting his key in what looks like a miniature safe that u then attach to the tow wring of your car... its pretty hectic, but he swears by and says u can pick them up at a surf shop in muizenburg...

Those waterproof pouches are pretty solid, definitely good enough for an electronic key when tucked into a boardies pocket or around your neck in a wetsuit.
I had a big one that fell out the boat with Peter's DSLR camera in it, it got hit by a 6-8ft wave at Sunsets  but the camera was fine, no leakage...

floris, u 1 taatie aapie

About those waterproof bags with the multiple folding to create the water tight seal, i can vouch for it. I went kloofing with mine which had my video camera i came away completely unscathed. I used the W-Tex one. U'll be surprised how well those stuff work

Thanks for all the responses, I like the idea of a non electronic copy think i might do that

What I do is I go down with my towel, i put my towel down by a spot where there is a rock or a landmark of some sort and bury the key under the towel by the landmark. If someone is watching you they will think you are just stashing your towel and if they scoop it you still have the landmark to find your key. No one will suspect you will bury your car key like that. I surf a pretty secluded spot though anyway.

Hiding your keys in the sand is the best way to hide them for sure, no doubt about that. It also happens to be the worst way to find your keys again after the sesh, markers or not.
Personally I'd rather not take my chances.

Sorry for the late post on this topic...

For those who suggested that for the new electronic keys you get a non-electronic duplicate cut I have done this and it works a charm. I previously used a waterproof pocket inside my wetsuit, it worked but a little water still made its way in and I was never really happy with it.

One word of advice here, the new locks are quiet "particular" (well on Toyota they are). I had to get a new key cut 4 times before I got one that worked.

The locksmiths in the Pick'nPay centre on the corner of Main and Tokai (Slaaptad) got it right first time, I highly recomend them.

well i drove an old toyota corolla- so put my key on a shoe lace round my neck. if a take my dads bakkie i put his remote and electronic key in the shocks. theres like this little shelf there which hides keys beautifully. and if i take 10-20min to try get em out im sure its a safe bet.

Usually put the key on a piece of string, and then around my neck. It works pretty well, for me.

I used to hide the key behind my number rear plate but sometimes there were too many people, still a little more unusual than shocks etc.

Now my car likes to sometimes unlock itself anyway... I love coming back to an unlocked car with everything still there. It's always such a bonus. 8)

all i do is wrap my keys in a tiny towel, dig a hole in the sand, put the towel in, cover it up with sand, and put a rock ontop or a stone and i just keep a lookout so nobody watches me when i do this and also just look around so i know whereabouts it is.

last time i didnt do that somebody stole my damn towel and it was a mission to find my keys cause the sun set already.

some ppl just dont know when to leave other ppls things alone.

There are people who hang around the beach or on the dunes with the specific intention of seeing where you hide your keys (shocks, sand etc). That's how my mate got his car stolen and I ended up having to replace all my stuff that was in his car...

U have an old school key,
use the ring on a key ring loop it thru ur wetsuit zip and hang ur key there :D
ur key will prob rust over time, so to prevent that wash it with clean water and lube it up

DON'T EVER DO THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And don't leave your key hidden on any other part of your car! Some nice enterprising South African is driving around in a nice new RunX because I hid the keys behind a lip in the bumper. And the car was only 1 week old with 300kms on the clock!!!

1 Hard lesson learnt  I didn't have a "plastic" key or a waterproof pouch at the time so taking the keys into the water with me was not an option. Do yourself a favour and get a "plastic" key from the dealer. It's expensive but well worth it in the long run! In fact I got my plastic key for free from the dealer when I bought a new car, just ask them for one. They'll usually chuck it in for you, especially now that the dealers are struggling to sell cars.
