Photographers Ahoy

  • June 2008
Yes there probably isnt a huge handful of us out there... but thought id give this a try going forward.

Are you a photographer, keen to shoot some bodyboarding missions to get those possibly exclusive shots, want to better yourself and progress?

If you are keen, got a setup and know the basics - advanced rules on shooting? Maybe respond with you Name, Province and area, what you shoot (land / land and water / water), when you are more likely to be able to shoot (days, times etc) and a way to contact yourself.

Think more if you are keen to get out with some missions and take some good shots for yourself, mag, friends etc...least people can have a way to contact you should there be an epic mission going down / some coverage needed....

as know with winter coming up there will be good waves to be had but not many people to cover it.

I'm a Keen Photographer, Only recently started shooting waves, I've been into landscapes and nature alot in the past, I don't have a water cam though.

I'm In east London, Eastern Cape.

I'm gonna post a link to an album of some of my recent swell shots, lemme know what you think.

Not many bodyboarders around here, so I dont have any shots of bodyboarders, only stand ups, and unridden swell.

Let me know what you think:

I live from photography and writing and have good contact with the locals around PE but it is always difficult to get good waves (especially in PE) and bodyboarders at the same time. It is even more difficult to get good light and a break that is not 800 metres from shore. Anybody in the PE area is welcome to contact me. I am going up the coast towards Natures Valley sometime soon to shoot mushrooms (sounds wierd) and will contact Sampi when it happens. Later in the year I am going up the West Coast and also in the Hermanus/Bettys Bay area for whales and would dig to have some good locals to photograph at their breaks.

Bleh, every time i want to post something i forget my dam password!

Anyway, ive been doing photography for about 2 years now with my cheap Fujipix S5600 lol, oh and a tri-pod from the 70's it friggin beats any tripod on the market today, such quality! xD

Done a few shoots at Holbaai with jason selby, pik, ian kruger bla bla
Dont really do it that often as im usually in the water instead, but if its big and im not amped i like to take my cam down and get some epic shots of those guys doing some crazy stuff :D

http://ch4os532.deviantart.com <-- some of my pics are on there if you want to check them out

@St john, sick pics man nice colours and contrast, do you shoot at a certain time of the day or do you edit your pics?

Hey Gman! I have the exact same camera as you.
    I wanna get a teleconverter soon, 2.2x

I mostly only shoot early morning during/Just after sunrise. It gives nice colors and contrasts.
once the sun is a bit over the horizon, about 10min after the sunrise colors are gone, its light hits the back of the swell, lighting it up.

one or two were taken during the day though. But i love shooting early morning.

I meant to reply to this topic the other day but completely forgot. There really are only a handful of us and we should try stick together where possible and share ideas – can only improve our work. I know Spy has already offered me the services of his advice which I will duly take up as and when needed. I have only been shooting for 6 months so am very new in the game and learning everyday. Have been shooting on and off with borrowed equipment on trips to the bush and from that grew a passion. I got into boogie shooting cos I have been boogie-ing for 20 odd years and I have a mate I wanted to help progress his career via exposure. I am not in it for the cash, just a passion and a hobby. I come from an advertising/marketing/writing background and I intend applying this to my work that I shoot. I don’t get to shoot often as I work a day job and am therefore limited to weekends. Shooting the good guys only benefits your work. But …

Shooting the groms will only add stoke to their conversations and lives and they are after all the future. The Glen Beach groms are always in the water – no matter what size it is. This last Saturday they were scoring some perfect waves all to themselves cos there was barely a surfer around. StJohn – you have some great skill there bru!

I will shoot whoever is in the water wherever I am, but I do have my mates that I dig to shoot and just mission with too. I would love to dedicate myself fully and say “please drop us a line and book a time with me” – I simply do not have that time available.

Sorry guy ... a customisation I need to make that I haven't got around to. Damon's user was not linked to a profile but I've fixed now. Usually you should be able to go to:

    > Profiles > Search > Members (By username)

    Here's a link directly to Damon's profile: http://www.sixty40.co.za/profile-damon-crawford-2787

I like what you guys are doing here. Good stuff!

    hey boys ;)
some super sic stuff happening on this thread, thanks DC for getting these guys together. em, for those of you that don't know about the series... check out the thread, otherwise i'm scramblin down all the details of each of yous.

in the meantime, Peter is letting us use two of his cams, Lex has a small hd cam with underwater casin and i still prefer to shoot stills on film, Canon EOS, though have never actually shot surfin so will be learning. However, super keen to come on random missions, workin only two days a week, based in Cape town CBD.

Busy getting showreel in order but in the meantime can find one of our jobs on YOutube. Shot a behind the scenes for Patrice, "Clouds" music vid, there will be a link for the behind the scenes, although this is like a full on commercial job, not as out there as we would prefer to shoot.
