Elementree,
I think it is possible to ride those on a bodyboard, but a few things:
>There is just SO much water moving out there, causing heaps of chop on the wave face.
>The chop of the waves becomes a VERY real problem. The standups have the ability to absorb the shock with their legs, while a booger will get bounced around and lose his edge/control repeatedly (VERY undesirable).
>One bounce off a chop on a wave that size translates into something like a 2m freefall. Do that 3+ times down a waveface and by the time you've got control again you're hammered AND in a weak position to generate speed to get out of there.
>A booger uses drag (legs and fins) to control turns at speed, while a surfer can turn and keep their speed. This means that on a bodyboard you have a harder time outrunning the wave.
>All these things make for VERY scary experiences.
So, I doubt that we would have done very well in the duck, as Mark says, but with a ski for solid positioning and quick rescues... its possible. Refine the weighted board we started working on... even more possible.
I think there is more scope for booger tow ins on heavy waves like Aussies at Cyclops than waves like Sunset, otherwise it would have taken off when Mike Stewart first got barreled at Jaws.
All we need to do is find the SA version of Clops
