Losing stoke

  • hugh grant

Does anyone ever reach a stage whereas they just stop improving, I'm pretty much stuck on a intermediate level at the moment, probably because I have no other Boogey boarders to surf with!! So depro, stuck in a small town with 9 locals, 8 of them surf!!
Hit the breadstick or what? I just got no-one to relate to with Boogying, maybe I'll just go play poker!

Perhaps a classic bodyboarding episode from Baywatch could fuel the stoke ... or maybe not.

Any idea which nineties US pro-bodyboarder is playing the judge in the middle? (small clue in the intro)

I'm pretty sure the judge is Brian Press?

His name's been on the tip of my tongue the whole evening, and then it just came to me.

    Ok here goes my answers..

The first Bodyboarder chick in the beginning is Mady Slater. not sure about the rest...
Middle judge is Brian Press, used to ride for BZ...

gee all this isn't helping hugh very much..

hmmm..maybe a surf trip to somewhere rad like indo with some mates would help get you stoked again?

10 points ... it is Brian Press. Here's a link to a video of one of his US pro wins in 1992. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AVudTtWSvvQ

To answer Hugh ... I stopped improving a while ago because I don't get in the water as much although I reckon I'm set for a second coming LOL ... seriously though maybe I had a little similar situation ... I grew up on the KZN South Coast and took a fancy to DK but the only local guy, Logan Hart (legend!), who rode DK seriously stopped riding when I started. The coast at that time had some really good local surfers and I ended up looking to them for inspiration and 'trying' to ride against them. You ride a wave differently even on DK but this was one thing that drove me to try improve my DK riding.

If you ride DK then I think it is always good to ride with some surfers.

But nothing better than having some younger groms pushing you ... so hopefully, even in your small town there will be some guys & girls taking up the sport.

ive never had anyone to look to for inspiration here in El. aslo a small town. but i get all my stoke from pushing myself. pulling into bombs. getting air. man!! how radical is this sport!!! dude, seriously, if big hollow close outs, or making it out of a barrel, or getting huge air dont inspire you, i dunno what will!! maybe try riding bigger waves, push your limits! get the adrenaline fllowing!!! read mags and check this site every day!!!! go wild 8)

    Dood,come now.
If ur the only bodyboarder where u stay then thats all the more reason for u to push ur riding and hopefully be the one the okes younger than u look up to in the near future.U can be their inspiration.

I all of a sudden built up the fiercest of pheobias from nowhere and was out of the water for like 5 yrs cos of it.
But the stoke kept me from never gettin in the water again.
It is the stoke that has given me my waterwings again.
It is the stoke I kno I will get every session that makes me face my fears.

U may think the stoke is fading, but it NEVER DIES.

    Keep getting stoked boet.

  • April 2008
ja think some of us can go through those stages esp when you not riding around a lot of good bodyboarders... its key to pushing yourself and boosting!!

the other option is just to get a solid 3-4ft plus day and just see how big and far you can boost!! so many bodyboarders ive seen think they get to a stage and never progress any further is because they dont realise that they are holding themselves back!!

Ask yourself right now if you had to paddle out to 8ft backdoor, make the drop, scoop and then if you make the barrel and have a solid 6ft section pitching like you have never seen it before over about waist deep reef would you bust it out as hard as you can? well i know Jeff does...to many bodyboarders talk and never apply themselves... all sick and stoked.. comes to the water and they get the biggest closeout or section and either just bail or pull into the barrel, hows about smashing it next time!! I think the more you boost and the less you hold back the more fun it becomes and so the stoke should return....otherwise try out some DK also to vary the skills a bit?

    where you staying?

My skills "plateaued" about 12years ago!!!! ha ha ha ha.....big rolls, old school cutties (sometimes one-handed) or hard DK turns, thats all the stoke I need right there.....My boards are in my car right now and I'm hitting it straight after work today, why? cause BOOGIE RULES!!!!!

Hugh... Ok lets face reality, i am still stuck at intermediate level too.... hahhahha.

Dude i have gone through ups and downs with "surfing" (all wave riding craft) for years. There are loads of things that lead to loosing the stoke, what you are going through is just 2 of them (no one to ride with and not progressing) Honestly i would say, invest in a bread stick, i used to own a mini mal and a 6'4. Spex stands up and so do allot of other bodyboarders, there is nothing wrong with it and it adds a little divercity to life. There is no way in hell you will catch me out at Kalk bay on a toothpick, im on my boogie all the way there, but then again there is no way you will catch me out at the berg on my boogie, there its the mini mal all the way. Different stoke bru.

But there have been times i get pissed off with the sport in general.
    reasons are:
    1) Un fitness
    2) The ammount of time surfing takes up
    3) Failed missions to the beach that just waste gas
    4) Wind wind and more wind
    5) crowds
    6) kuk equipment (holy wetstuit and water logged board with nose peeling off)
    7) over priced equipment
    8) living in parklands

Anyways those are all negatives and result in no one seeing me in the water for months.

But most surfers have other outlets too
I mountain bike, and i flipping love it, some play in a band, others play golf or tennis or cricket, some smoke zol and watch movies.

Life is way to short to get depro
Take bodyboarding out of your life for a bit and you will start to realise how much you miss it and how much stoke it brought into your life. Ask any land locked booger in london. The first sight of waves has you jumping for joy.

The stoke comes and goes bru, that life, its how you deal with it that counts.

Ja wat Mark says is tru.
U just need to get out there and I kno it cos I experience it myself, the first couple big ones r a lil nerve racking.
But all it takes is for u to take off on a bomb and the rest is eezy.

I kno guys who say "nooit its too big" or "too shallow" but all they had to do is take off on one and then see its not as bad or as scary as they first thought.

    Take off,get stoked,never giv up.
Im doin province trials for the 1st time ever at age 28 and Im sucking large.
Never really been the contest type either.
    More soul surfer.
But its not the results that count for me,its the fact that im out there with the big names pushing my riding further, gettin back into it and meeting the new & the good people that the sport produces.

Of all the sports out there,I skeem bodyboarding has the bestest peeps.

As for feeling stuck with progression,it happens in all sports.
U just gotta push on thru it,then u will realise that anything is possible if u simply apply urself.
    Maybe get a surfboard too?
I got one and I watch standup flicks to get ideas and a different lines for DK reasons.

Also like skateboarding, once u have pretty much mastered ur natural stance.....its time to wax the switch my broo.
There's always something u can learn i hav found.

    B kiff.

PS:Oi did u just make a jab at me Spy?

take it you are refering to the parklands chirp... naw brah, not you.
I am a false bay boytie, always have been, always will be, but i lived in parklands for like 3 yrs and saddly missed ALLOT of reef sessions cos it was just just tooooo damn far to drive. And ask any of the reef locals on this site, if you hear its on and you cant get there, (like being at work, shopping for plants with the wife, or the wife just say's NO --- cos she wants quality time  you slump into this weird sulky depression... and mope around the rest of the day and get violent with any mate that happened to catch it and tell you about it afterwards (Peter Lambert is great for rubbing salt into wounds, he is infact a professional)

So ya, thats why Parklands bleaks me out and the fact that it reminds me of that song: Little boxes on the hill side.

    1. Little boxes on the hillside,
    Little boxes made of ticky-tacky,
    Little boxes, little boxes,
    Little boxes, all the same.
There's a green one and a pink one
And a blue one and a yellow one
And they're all made out of ticky-tacky
And they all look just the same.

    2. And the people in the houses
    All go to the university,
And they all get put in boxes,
    Little boxes, all the same.
And there's doctors and there's lawyers
    And business executives,
And they're all made out of ticky-tacky
And they all look just the same.
    3. And they all play on the golf-course,
    And drink their Martini dry,
And they all have pretty children,
And the children go to school.
And the children go to derde steen
    And then to the university,
And they all get put in boxes
And they all come out the same.

    4. And the boys go into business,
And marry, and raise a family,
And they all get put in boxes,
    Little boxes, all the same.
There's a green one and a pink one
And a blue one and a yellow one
And they're all made out of ticky-tacky
And they all look just the same.

JEEEEZ dood that song just made me even miffer!!!
But i see wat u mean bro.
Trust me,my box is neither of those colours too :D

But i do get very bummed when im at werk and its firing.
And yes I too hav to giv the lady of my life her "quality time" when i would rather be surfing.
And yes I too get the straight up "HELL NO!!!".

    But sacrifices r good.
Cos next time its goin off u can just say "CHEERS I'm gone its cooking!!!!" or "Have supper ready cos I'm gonna be hella hungry when I get back!" LOL

Im thinking of buying an extra set of gear so that I have stuff in town and in the view for whenever either side has waves.
Im btwn town and tableview everyday.
Just such a bummer to have to drive from werk, sit in an hours traffic only to get like 20mins of session in b4 its too dark and yr car gets stolen!!!

    Lakka.

Thanks everyone for the replies, I agree on diversifying and finding alternative stokes! Currently I'm playing in a metal-core band aswell as proffesional poker! Bodyboarding is my number one stoke and I will ride untill the day I die (or get really old like Mr. Bradford, Mr. Marque and ol chinnychinchin.)
The huge problem is I have no encouragement to carry on boogying, all my mates always try to get me to breadstick! I have no bodyboarding peers to relate to, no-one hoots for me when I bust a flip or vert. The best response I get is "how sick would that look on a surfboard." I'm really tired of having absolutely no respect for what I do!
Lately I boogey by myself, and lately I feel like I'm not improving, I cant even hit big waves, the spots here never pick up big swell!!
Thanks all for sharing the stoke, much appreciated!

I'm off to go test my new water housing and 20mm lens, then maby a quick boogie.
    meeeeooooooowwwwwww!!!!!
but seriously, it all about priorities, I lack many things cause I make getting in the ocean one of the things at the top of the list.
thats why i can't afford a little box made out of tickey takey that all looks the same.

Wahaha! I'm pissing myself laughing over the two of you (Spy & Peter). Bru anybody that misses a swell at KBay and has to listen to someone going off about how good it was is gonna give that person a beat down. Nobody wants to miss swell at the reef - that's why you find guys on it at 5am when it's 2ft

@ Hugh: If u having a hard time with the boogie, take a break and do something else for a while. Eventually the stoke will bring you back and you'll find you have more fun than ever. I was 'out' of surfing for almost 5 years cos I was into a 'serious' relationship with my ex and I started sailing and stuff. Now I'm back in the water whenever possible and loving it more than ever - I'm pushing myself harder than before and I'm having more fun than ever!! If all else fails do a road trip to some place that you know you are gonna find good boogies ripping it up. Cape Town is ideal, there's always some dude busting the crap out of the waves here and we have such a wide variety of surf. Problem is that if you do a road trip u may never want to go home

PARKIES RULES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Tacky houses and all.....why do I say this, you ask, cause I'm 8min from 3erde steen, 15min from Melkbos.....I went surfing straight after work last night and got 2-3ft tubes at Horsetrails with just 2 other boogies out, we were trading waves, hooting and checking out the awesome sunset. I got surf on Friday and was home in 10min, I surfed for 3 hours on Sunday, till I couldn't paddle any more, got home in 10min and mowed my lawn. It's all about perspective bro. Love it or hate, Parkies rules.

Shot Peter! Went down to Hoek yesterday evening after seeing your post (yes I know it was high tide!) and got really fun 3ft waves. It was totally uncrowded and surprisingly hollow for such a high tide. 8) Hope to see your photos in the gallery soon.
