hahaha...wind guru always takes things abit overboard... i dont think i have ever seen the swell size on windguru under 1 meter... one time (for durban) it said 3.5m swell with 20 knot offshore and was rated full 3 stars... i rocked up at the beach to see like 2 foot stuff... was so bummed

compare it to MSW sure you heard of it. or magic sea weed to others.

if it matches up it should be as predicted . if not...not such a guru.

Well a few weeks back, Len, Gareth, Pete Brand and Marty surfed Hoek in offshore winds that reached 93km/h (according to the argus) i wanted to take photos but didnt even take my camera out of the bag due to fact that the air was impregnated with sand.
    1) You cant breath when trying to paddle into a wave
    2) you cant see cos of the spray and sand
    3) it blows the waves flat.

    so ya
too strong a wind sux big time.

MSW is calling the wind for east london on monday at 62.751km/hr but the swell is only at 6seconds, and thats not very good.

have to remember when these sites give a report it not for the surf or wind speed at the coast it is for of shore normally at a range of about 20 to 40 nautical miles. I've been out to see where we wind guru has said 5 meter swell and 25 knots of wind and when we left the harbor it was all cool and calm as soon as we got past cape point which was about 20 miles we hit the wind and swell. There are a lot of factors that determine whether or not that weather pattern is going to reach you 100 meters from the shore.

Those sights should merely be used as a guideline for surfers unless you are able to factor in the rest of the variables.

Ya that surf was so pointless...

Firstly you couldn't see the sets approaching due to the "mile-long" spray left by the breaking waves and secondly, you couldn't see the wave you were paddling for because of the spray.

Personally i would say that if the winds do reach those speeds, it would be pointless bunking school - rather get educated.

    As for swell prediction websites...

    Very true...

Swell size is meaured in the "open ocean" and swell of 5m plus at 10 seconds should translate to either solid 6 foot to possibly 8 foot depending on how direct the swell is.

If i look at the predicted swell for Cape Town for today it says...4m at 13sec, winds speed of 2 knots North at 08:00am this morning. I have been informed that swell was about 4 foot and pretty much near perfection with each wave gassing out! I am so bleak right now because as i type this i can see the wind increasing and i know that by the time i finish work it won't be nearly as good as it was earlier!

Do i really need this job?

    AAAAARRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

    SOLUTION

Surf it as will knock it down to about half the size so still solid! yes paddle in would suck with spray in the eyes.. not to worry, use a pair of swimming googles ;) presto! you can see again...

just a thought.. if its solid atleast... might look funny but least you getting the barrels.. hahaha!!

otherwise surf it, but i feel the key to strong offshores is to take off last moment so you not paddling with all that spray in the face etc.. just last minute drop in, less spray in the face and nice wide gaping barrels...

i used goggles when shooting from the water... granted i was on a mission to get the inside the wave shot, but it does help, dunno about surfing though...
