Oh and well done to peter and whoever organised to get that on the cover..it's so good for the public to see something of bodyboarding other than some guy rolling through the foam at a 1ft onshore beachie!

Twas me that organised the coverage, but would have never thought we would get front page...so i am the happiest dude ever!

In the words of Mr Moolenschot..."I was grinning more than a kid with a cherry bomb", when i walked into the shop this morning.

During the few minutes i was there no less than 3 people walked in and stood amazed by the photo saying..."that is insane! and Wow thats big!"

Well done Peter and DCMike for providing us with these wondeful images...they really do bring the "WOW" factor back to bodyboarding!

Another BIG THANKS has to go to Tony Weaver from the Cape Times...without his stoke we wouldn't have gotten in.

Now go out and buy a copy!

WOW!!!! This is INSANE!!!!!! What a way to start the day! STOKE!!!!
Without James Moolenshcot, Mike DC, Gareth White, Mark Clark, Andre Higo Van Zyl, Len and The Guys at Reef, none of this would have been possible... Thanks Guys for all you help and for making it happen.... You rock! You have no idea how stoked I am - Have had about 15 phone calls and 20 SMS's so far and it just make me so amped on bodyboarding, as sport that has given so much. I can only begin to imagine what this year is going to have instore for us and all the new waves that are going to be surfed. James I really miss having you around and having my rubber arm bent into a zillion exploration missions. I hope all is well with you in the uk:)
I heard a rumour that Reef is going to run the comp again this year and if they do its only going to push the sport further! maybe we can even have a tow surf category as well this year?
Also massive thanks to my long time sponsors, Kelly and Derek Footit at http://www.factory7.co.za

Mike and Pete - well done! Now I'm gonna have to name-drop you guys at my local coffee-shop :-)

Big up as well to Ian Thurtell and James Moolenschot for appearing in the Echo in the last few weeks - Ian's photo, especially, was an amping large size.

This'll make people think twice when thinking of the "Boogeys", and teach those prematurely old farts that give us crap in the water that the revolution starts at home, immediately after their kids see these photos and get amped on sponging!
  • peterbee

... and oh yeah, Ian's photo in the Echo was shot by Spy, so well done to him as well - nice photo!

    Excellent!

I saw this this morning and I was SUPER amped! Well done everyone.

Just a thought - shouldn't we send some "positive feedback" to the Cape Times? I think if a klomp of us wrote similar things to what have been written here to the editors they'd appreciate what an impact their decision to print the cover had.

Nice one guys ... always great to see bodyboarding making the press ... but that is about as good as you can hope for.

That photo ran because of the wow factor and because that is what sells papers (I like how they had to circle you in red there Pete). This is the extreme side to bodyboarding, we know that we want to see more of it but guys like the editor at the Cape Times are now telling us that the public want to see more and that is where we want our sport to be.

And it is credit to the guys who made this happen - Peter Lambert & James Moolenschot for their missions to find the big stuff, DC for being there to capture it and Gareth for following up with the article and getting the shots onto their desks. It does not magically happen so thank you for the efforts of all involved.

Over the last year there has been a bit more focus on producing quality media coverage from events by increasing marketing budgets and that has reflected in the articles and photos which make the papers. So thanks to SABA and the provinces for this - I know budgets are tight.

FYI ... last year we had the SA Times in London run a full page photo on the front cover - Justin Lindsay was the man with the below invert shot by DC at SA Champs.

"the public want to see more and that is where we want our sport to be."

I totally agree and have heard likewise of the public here, as well!

Congratulations to Peter, Mike and Gareth--for having submitted the info to the Newspaper! Stoked!
So amped for the progression of Bodyboarding, as a positive view, to the enjoyment of the public. :D

  • April 2008
atleast more people will know the name of bodyboarding and not boogyboarding and not knowing how to pronounce the sport ;)

hmmmm but maybe the name boogeyboarding still rocks?!

sick one everyone, Gareth, Peter, Mike AC/DC and Science, Reef.... Vouka - Unlucky hey!

    April 2008
Thanks for all the kind words guys.

Yeah thanks to all the riders and photographers who make getting bodyboarding into the media a little easier, but like Kelly says...these things don't happen by chance and there is a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes, Kelly and this website are prime examples thereof, that is often unrewarding, but when topics or discussions such as this one take place and one recieves positive feedback about the work you've done it makes the late nights, stressful deadlines and nervous breakdowns(jokes) worth it!...so big up to all who appreciate the efforts made by all involved with bodyboarding media!

I also organised those shots in The Echo and other Independant Community Newspapers, but it would not have been possible without the riders, photographers and a really cool Editor & Chief...so much thanks has to go to her and her team!

If you guys are lank amped to check more Boogie in the papers go out and buy todays Die Burger and go to page 16...stoked for James!

Lets hope that this is a sign of things to come.

I like the idea about you guys giving positive feedback to the newspapers...please do...it will aid our cause!

    Soopersick allround guys!!!

Had supper with a couple peeps last night and the topic of "boogyboarding" came up.
They were like,"Do they still hav the handles on the front and the fin thingies?"
    AHEM!!!
Needless to say I had to set the record straight.
Told them about the cover how the boys r charging Sunsets etc...& also that the theory of how bodyboarding is supposedly easier is a complete load of moopoo.
    They couldnt b'leev it.
Showed them the site and they were wowed to say the least.

They were actually quite surprised when I laid down all the facts too.
Now they kno and hav turned their views on the sport 180 degrees.

    And Im glad :D

It is so awesome to see that the Reef/Science Big Wave contest is getting so much coverage and of course that it has put bodyboarding in a positive public view.
I remember that when Peter and I bought the little boat that motivated many of these crazy missions (and from which this photo was taken) we were hoping to get this sort of coverage and that might lead to sponsorship for running the boat. It's a pity that we (or maybe only me) couldn't afford to keep pushing money into it any longer. Hopefully in the near future, companies will see benefit in helping us on these sort of missions.

And I know its just a photo, but it took 4 okes to get this shot, considering that Peter and I were in the water riding and pushing each other into waves, but also MikeDC was shooting while Mark Clark skippered the boat around the channel avoiding the freak sets and doing the imminent rescues of both Peter and myself that resulted from this wave and the next set that cleaned me up and took my board to munch on for a while. In the space of 10 minutes, both Peter and I were sitting in the boat bleeding from various limbs and feeling grateful that Mark was there to save the day.

Reef/Science have done well with this contest and I hope that they do keep it running. Maybe the next contest to encourage some action from the East coast brothers, should be a contest for the Biggest Air... Tow-Outs included!

toit like a tiger, been away quadbiking in the mountains for a few days.

Peterbee can you organise me a copy of the echo... i havnt seen the pic of ian in print yet.

    Nice on gareth...

good time and bad times and scary times on that boat i must say!! but some of the best fun and stoke ive had thanks for Peter and JMO...couldnt have felt better after being slung into a 15ft beast at Sunset only to make it out and share the stoke!!

wahooo.. now come back JMO and lets hook up another boat. We know a bunch of rediculously good spots that havent been riden, just need the boat crew reunited!!

But ja would be good to look for some sponsors for the boat again for missions as its not much to invest and get loads of even sicker crazier footage esp that there has been some investments in water housings etc...should i say more.. ahhhh no.

Not to forget Mike trusting his camera in many dodgy occasions also!! Good old mike for hanging in there ... almost got cleaned out off the boat at sunsets when the odd foam ball caught Mike and JMO off gaurd..haha!

Heard stories of Peters camera floating aorund in the impact zone in small tupperware dish.. haha!

Mike good stuff there on the shooting, looking really good and stoked to check you getting all these good shots!! Keep em firiing and let the good times flo...

ps Mike where you at on Sunday? Lots of swell and should be shooting some water stuff so people also keep an eye out, paddle up say howdy and get real close in that barrel.. you could be on the next cover or newspaper ;)

Ahahah Mark, funny, hectic reminiscing memories--loved the read!

Craig, good on you--sharing the stoke and setting the "record" straight.

Lyle, awesome addition to G's idea of writing the newspaper--
    Quote:
maybe tune the editor of cape times to log in here and read the thread instead of one or two guys sending in email?? then he can see first hand how we all behind this sort of thing... just a thought...

Yep, for the stoke of bodyboarding to spread, I cannot emphasize enough==how important it is to venture out of your "circle of friends" and embrace the world with your passion--but I guess it take's passion to spread and spill over.
Some still want to keep it a "secret" yet want to reap the "rewards".
And don't get me wrong, these reward's come in a multiple of forms--
    something to contemplate. ;)
    Mighty fine website, here, Kelly!
I absolutely LOVE Factory 7, Derek, for INTERNATIONAL sales!
I finally ordered PULL THE PLUG 2 and await it's arrival--so amped to see it!--Great job Jared and his crew--loved PTP#1!
I loved HOLLOW CAST By Vivid Zeal as well!
Definitely don't want to leave out SIXTY-40 Bodyboarding Magazine!
I so look forward to the arrival of my Sixty40 Mag and my CRYSIS BODYBOARDING magazine as well!
Stoked to see coverage of SPEX, Brandon Foster etc along with my bud,Omar Leon, whom I talked to at WaveHouse on our trip last May as I shot some pics.
I can really feel the creshendo(?) of bodyboarding amongst the public! It is so very exciting to experience.
Hopefully the sponsor's will get on the bandwagon as well and follow suit!
You would think they would be a tad ahead of the game? HELLO?!
I must say we have always been extremely happy with
Cartel Bodyboard's as Natalie's sponsor and being part of the "Team" with Paul Roach.
Such good times, so many experiences and amazing memories!
I also want to say how impressed I have been with the support of "Len at Science" and "Alistair Taylor at ATD".
Their attension to customer satisfaction is VERY COMMENDABLE!
I have never communicated with Len, however his communication is evident on this site.
I have emailed on occasion with Alistair Taylor and I was very impressed with his prompt response's, the very same day and
within only a couple hours! Both obviously aim to please!
    OK--get the picture??
    Enough of my ramble/randomness--

DAMN! I HATE THAT "SAVE" BUTTON! I CLICK IT EVERYTIME!
AND, I shouldn't admit to this--sometime's for a SECOND time!
Kelly probably has some way of telling and is laughing to himself or thinking--well I won't say :)
