those guys deserve respect for stopping those oes. anyone that can kill animals like hat deserve to be shot in the knee caps and hung from their nuts from the pier where they would drown while getting cut to shreds by the mussels.

Unfortunately poaching is a societal symptom just like most other crimes in general. You can't tell people to not poach and then leave them with fuckall means to an income.

Don't get me wrong, poaching is one of the least forgiveable sins and crimes in my eyes. Third only to rape/sexual abuse and murder.

But surely these people don't do it because they think "Hey awesome. Let's kill this here dolphin/seal/penguin/gorilla. It'll be fun and then I can go and tell my kids all about it."

I watched a documentary about poachers in Northern/Central African rainforests and it breaks those peoples' hearts to have to poach, but they have no other natural means to obtain an income anymore due to French paper factories coming in to their village areas and just plundering everything. These people used to be hunters and gatherers and are now forced to use their skills as an income generating exercise by poaching since there is nowehere left to just live "with" nature. The factories promised them scholls and development and jobs in the factories, but nothing came of it so the people were left to their own devices.

I seriously doubt it. Especially when you can't feed your children.

i havent seen the docu you talking about, but i doubt that no one can find a job or create work for themselves so they all have to go out and poach.there is always a way to live in peace with your surroundings man.

its a bit different in terms of these whaling companies.the Japanese government has acknowledged the law that has been passed by the UN, that no commercial whaling is allowed anymore, but they, under the banner of 'whale research', still each year kill up to a thousand whales, per research vessel!
all in the name of research?????? it is a blatant attempt to cover up their illegal activities.(and they are the ones that declare what they are doing, there are still hundreds of ships that are out there murdering these creatures but the Japanese government simply turns a blind eye)

they also claim that this is their tradition and that they should not be forced to change their ways.fair enough.but then stick to traditional numbers and methods.i doubt that one ship in a season would take 1000 whales from the ocean on its own 60/70 years ago!

the biggest problem is that their is no one to enforce these environmental protection laws, mainly because japan is a wealthy an influencial country and no one want s to step on their toes.

thats why i think that what Sea Shepherd is doing and how they operate is crucial in stopping this shit from going on!

It takes a pirate to stop a pirate and if the worlds navy's are not going to step up and patrol the international waters, that are in fact wildlife sanctuaries, then hell yes lets do it ourselves!

man spends millions upon millions on looking for intelligent life in space, when the most intelligent of all life on earth is in our oceans and here we are as a species simply raping it for personal gain.its pathetic.

international navy's should stop playing their silly little war games and protect whats more important!

Wade.

I Agree 100% with your take on whaling! No excuse for that. That's not even poaching really. That's approved conduct under a false blanket, as you put it.

But with true poaching like in the DRC, especially seriosuly rural areas / in the rainforests there is really feck all these people can do but poach to sustain a living. It's all they know how to do i.e. hunt. But now, some doos made their traditions profitable as is the case with whaling and they naturally jump at the chance to make a living out of it.

Shitty cycle.

Sea shepherd has been going for ages and I've always supported them. They are the only true honourable terrorist organisation.

I think most spongers out there will agree that our sea life should be protected - so can I put the question out there:

1. What can we do as an individual to make a difference? For starters - what local or international organisations can we support.
2. We have a community here, so collectively what can we do? (I'm more than willing to work with anyone on this)

--

The rate at which species on our planet have disappeared over the last century is scary - bigger, faster and technologically advanced fishing vessels make it one seriously mismatched fight between our friends in the ocean and our bigger, hungrier throw-away society.

But people need to be fed and aquaculture production is increasing its yield (see below graph) inline with population growth. But my uneducated guess is that most of it is not sustainable.

So as with everything, it is about consumer demand. I'm not sure how many people realise the demise of Cod fish stocks (the favoured fish in Fish & Chips) but the below graph shows a shocking 90% decline in Canada's Atlantic Cod catch in the early 90's.

So it comes down to education in my opinion - I know this fact and no longer eat Cod but what is the alternative? Or would I simply be contributing to the demise of another fish species? What sustainable fish stocks are out there?

And although we care, do we care enough to pay extra or choose another product for the greater good?

Lets try this, ban condoms, let AIDS spread and kill off the worlds over popultion, ban all medicine, outlaw docters from washing their hands, sell cigarettes to children, allow drunk driving, legalise hard drugs, legalsie prostitutes, leagalise terrorists. Stop inspections at airports and harbours for bombs.
i can go on and on and on.

The propblem lies with the worlds population. Solve that and everything else will follow.

oh yes happy birthday to gareth white for yesterday...

Ha ha...that is funny.

Happy Birthday to me tied in with a topic on global demise...hummm

Thanks Spy.

I like what you are getting at Kelly.

Shop wisely...same goes for the purchasing of our industry related products such as clothing...etc.

Sadly however the vast majority of people don't give two hoots and will only think twice once most of these species/bodyboarding brands have all but disappeared.

Ja its all relative hey.
Gareth Happiness brother for yesterday!!!! :D
Hopefully u get branders this weekend bud.

I've always thought, wow look how many new cars r on the rd today.
Peeps r buying new cars every single day.
Thats why our rds r soooo uber packed and why driving has become such a las.
Where do all the old cabs go?
Most stay on the rd unless theyr totally pumped or scrapped.
So the numbers just keep gettin bigger & bigger u know?
Its something that picks at my brain all the time.

And with regards to our planet.
Its like first,in the beginning,a dood caught sum fish and realised he could do well for himself selling them.
A few years down the line he's got clued up on how to catch more with less effort cos he has nets now and so on....

Now we have incredibly cajunga cowabunga corporations that catch millions of tons of not only the fish they wanna sell but alot of other species aswell like crustations and many other things.
Most of which die in the process!!!

The people of Earth just havnt grasped that if they continue to take & take & take at such a massive level, that eventually they wont be able to take anything at all.
We really need to learn how to live sustainably and in peace with our surroundings just like Wade says which is so totally possible if everyone just got their lazy asses into gear.
U just need to realise that it starts with u thats all.
If we all just realised that,IM sure the world would become a better place to live and play in

One.

no worries boet, hope you had a good one and the lady treated you well.

ok i got another idea, DONT EAT ANYTHING!

What with fish stocks falling, cows farting holes in the ozone layer, gentically modified meilies and chickens bred without heads or feet... just dont eat a thing. easy as that. Think of all the trees you will save, and sea horses and wild mountain goats.
• jovi

Maybe they should bann killing cows and maybe stop killing chickens.
just think no more Hamburgers and no more sunday roast?
• Murphman

The difference between killing cows and chickens, and killing whales and dolphins is that cows and chickens are bein bred for food, whereas whales and dolphins aren't!!! Personally i'd much rather have a dolphin swim past me while im in the water than have millions of cows all over the place!!!

I think the only reason we eat cows and chickens (and eggs) is cause we like to pretend we don't know what is really going on......chickens and cows have a tiny brains but they know what suffering/pain is. I think if we all had to kill our own food it would take a while for most of us to eat meat. I once saw a sheep getting slaughtered the old fashioned way and it was horriffic, that poor thing bleated the whole way, until it's head was off......I'm no hippie whole-wheat-sandle veggie or vegan or anything like that, but we all hear horror stories about half dead animals still kicking while they're getting skinned at the slaughter houses. I saw a program on SKY 2 months ago that featured some crab fisherman in the Baltic sea, hectic conditions, but they pulled out huge crabs by the ton for 27 hrs straight.......one fishing boat......Thats not right....What point am I making, I dunno, but what I do know is our society is all screwed up. People will pay a million sticks for a damn car but they refuse to give one red cent to the needs of the millions of AIDS orphans.....only if people change the way they think and percieve the world around them and everything in it, will the fate of our planet change, but until then it's a down-hill roller coaster with no brakes.......

1) The unnatural ammount of cows and chickens on this planet is causeing a hole in the ozone layer.
2) The unnatural ammount of cows and chickens on this planet is causeing an imbalanece in the ammount of land dedicated to farming food for these animals
3) I dig the show ""Most dangerous catch" you should see how many Kreef walk out of the water on the west coast during a red tide... it will blow your friggin mind, and you cant eat the stuff cos its toxic,
4) Like they said on the matrix... we are a virus.

BE A MEAT REDUCER
Recently I talked to ex-Beatle Sir Paul McCartney about vegetarianism and the environment, an important link he feels is being overlooked in the global warming discussion. He shared some shocking statistics from a 2006 UN report entitled Livestock's Long Shadow: Environmental Issues and Options."

The report found that 18 percent of global warming emissions come from raising cows, chickens, pigs, turkeys and other animals we eat. That's 40 percent more than all the world's cars, SUVs, airplanes, and other modes of fossil-based transportation, which combined account for 13 percent. For further comparison, every house, residential and office building in the world accounts for just 8 percent.

There's a trend in Europe called "Meat Reducers" where, along with recycling and not taking plastic bags, people are eating meat at least one day less a week. Become a "Meat Reducer." It is a simple thing everyone can do to lower their own carbon footprint.
