Reef "big wave" leashes

  • fullung

    Hello all,

Just wanted to warn you about some problems I've been seeing with Reef's "big wave" bicep leashes.

I bought one from Natural Energy in Strand a few weeks ago. On my first wipeout, the plastic part through which the velco strap goes snapped, leaving me with a rather long swim to go and find my board. Luckily, I did.

I took the leash back to the shop where one of the guys checked out the other leashes on the shelf and promptly snapped the plastic part of another leash by applying gentle pressure with his fingers. They then proceeded to remove all the Reef leashes from the shelf.

This weekend at Caves I checked a guy with a new Reef leash. While I was still contemplating whether I should warn him about my misadventure, I saw that his leash had also broken, same as mine. He said it snapped when he was paddling for a wave. This was his second broken Reef leash. If I recall correctly, he purchased them in Hermanus.

See you in the water (hopefully with something more durable than a Reef leash).

    Cheers,

    Albert

    Damn.
IM not one to badmouth anyone but I must say every single Island style leash I hav ever bought has never let me down.
I rock the thickest bicep leash they make and its awesome.
Only other leash thats stood the trst of time was the Gyrol, but it did tear thru 1 or 2 of my boards
Maybe Reef just made a one-time booboo.
    Hey it happens.
The brightside is that they will learn from it and push things forward hopefully.

But he piece ur talking about shouldnt really come under that much stress should it?
    Anyways....

    Hello,

I'm also using Island Style for the moment. They last a while.

I think whoever manufactured the Reef leashes got the plastic recipe wrong or something.

The plastic part probably doesn't come under too much stress. However, as I said, the guy in the shop snapped it by gently twisting it with his fingers.

    Cheers,

Hello I've been surfing for a few years now. Always surfing with IS. I had a few that snapped on small days thats still brand new and then ones that lasted for ever.

Len from Science Bodyboards / Reef Wetsuits recently gave me the Reef leashes to try out. I ve been surfing for over a month on heavy Caves/Hoek/Rooi Els waves. The only thing that Happen with my leash was the rope wared out a bit and I ve replaced that with another rope.

Bury in mind that a leash is a leash and it will snap some time but don't go making comments like that about Reef Wetsuits South Africa.

My reef wetsuits knee pads fell off.... now i just charge with glue patches on my knees. Those knee pads were really lame anyways. But i got a science

I prefer wrist leashes for some reason, in a wet suit a bicep leash is fine, but when you are in baggies, they lend to cut the tender flesh of my arm, not nice to be bleeding out at caves, fear factor takes on a whole new meaning.

Guys, I don't even bother to use the Reef leash, because everytime someone I know gets one, it seems to break quickly -- either the plastic thingie, or the fabric fold gets torn through by the plastic thingie... We're talking first sessions on some of these!

My word to Reef is: sorry guys, you got it wrong. Hopefully this can be sorted out soon...

(I have had one or two IS leashes where the Velcro wears out ultra-quickly as well - I just sew some new velcro on - which is not ideal! - and then I'm okay.)

I used to work for Island Style for about 4 years and while i was there they used to offer a lifetime warentee on leashes... but now i think its changed to a year... bsically if you break it, take it back and they will usually repair it for you...might take a week or so but they were pretty good back in the day..

I never had a reef leash soley cos the IS ones i have had hav always been of good construction and materials and lasted yrs.
Sure if u bail or get pumped they will snap from time to time but more so to the actual cord.
With regards to the wetsuit kneepads, yes they do wear thin quickly which i a bit of a bummer but theyr gettin better every year which is sumthin i hav noticed too.

As for the fin teathers....thats why i use laces bruv.

Oh and PS: Im sure no-one on this thread has directly badmouthed Reef wetsuits SA guys.
Yes we may hav given sum constructive criticism but thats meant to be a good thing and it aids them with getting qualitative reasearch 4 free.
Thats wat is so great about this site.

    hi Guys

yes we had some problems on the leashes, that we do not knew will happened. All new leashes that goes into the shops has been tested for weaknesses. i had been using mine since end of last year and had no problems ( and i take a lot of over the falls and get donnered by waves a lot).i have found my leash comfortable and at least it fits around my upper arm.

each and every leash that broke and were returned were replaced and will be if it happens in future. if anybody do have a leach that is broken, please let me sort you out or return it to the shop of purchase. i am allways available to sort your problems out.

    thanks guys

Thanks for the feedback Len. I'll definitely check out the Reef leashes with proper plastic parts when I need one again, since the rest of the leash looked pretty solid.

As far as I know the leash range is fairly new to Reef. This generally means that its a new supplier and often these guys need a bit of pressure to use the higher quality plastic buckles, velcro's etc instead of the cheap chinese equivalents. I'm sure that the Reef will iron out the issues, but usually this affects the price a bit too.

If you are riding heavy surf then try finding the coil leashes that don't have the moulded kink in them at each end of the coil, they tend to be weak if overstretched often. I think Island Style and Custom X do the non-kinked versions...

    hey Guys,

ok firstly i just want to bring something up that should be quite clear to everyone in the sport of BB, we are all trying to push this sport locally and it has always been said that you must support those who support bodyboarding......Reef has now come out with a pretty sick leash (Their 1st one) and i was given one the very first day by Len, to this day it is still going strong, and i have had my fair share of solid days at spots all over the contry.....every company ever opened will have mishaps and thats something that will help them in the future to improve their product.

This being said, Peter i really thing you went over board when you dissed Reef after all they have done for you. the day is going to come when one of your boards buckels or creases on a half a foot day.....what then? you dont want bad remarks or people bad mouthing your product, do you?

think bout it guys.... all reef needs is the help from all riders to help improve on the weaker areas.

    Len and everyone at Reef thanks for a really good product.... it's a waist of your time to even listen to rider that thinks he is the bee's knee's. keep it up....;

    cheers all

Hi, Vaughan - you've got it wrong, I reckon you're thinking of Peter Lambert (he tells me Len made the same mistake!).

It was me, Peter Brandt, who made the comment... and I didn't dis them, I just said what I felt and shared my hope that they'd get it sorted.

    Cheers

wow.. have you okes never heard of the term of freedom of speech?
Also have ytou never heard the term consumer rights?

I know Isabelle Jones is dead now, but heck, thats what she did, on TV and radio, which is far more public forum than this one. She fought for the consumer, who spent hard earned rands for products or services that were below par.

Then to go publically slander Peter Lambert?? what gives okes? Click on the profile, follow the links, its that easy.

Ok Vaughn, i accept that your leash has never broken, but a few okes on this forum, beg to differ. Its good that it comes out, cos then Reef can take note and improve on the product. Same as IS can take note that their velcro sucks.

For Reef to take everything personally, isnt good business practice, take the good with the bad, not everyone is going to like your product. People still do have that simple freedom, the freedom to choose what they want to spend their bucks on.

Peter Brand is entitled to his opinion, to get aggressive about it is just childish and kinda reminds me of mugabie or the ANC. We like to think things like this are open for relevent discussion, thats what this board is all about.

On the plus side i am digging my new science board. and Kalk bay was super freaky last night with a family of seals hell bend on freaking the shit out of all in the water by breaching right next to us, blowing bubble at our boards and barking right in our faces with their loverly fishy breath and yellow fangs (those damn seals must lay off the ciggys and coffee)

i dissagree, its not a waist of time. these are real issues experienced by the public. remember we as the public are the one's that buy the product which allows len to give you freebies. so our opinion should be heard and shouldnt be "a waist of time". i think len understands this and takes everything being said here as positive critisism.

come on guys be nice to each other, i had such a great surf session on sunday at caves and had the biggest barrel of my life and got gassed out. at 46 thats wow. we had a stand up surfer (old local coolbay surfer) taking barrels with us and being so stocked for all of us. he was deeper that any other surfer i have seen in coolbay. he was so nice to all of us, respect.

what about something positive while i work on getting the right produck out there for you. we have sorted out our wetsuits neck, we have sorted out better knees , we are using more softer and warmer neoprene in our wetsuits. we did bring out a boardbag that can take two boards and can lock (dubble slider) , we did bring in a stronger fin tether, a floating fin that affordable and many more, now i am sorting out the leach. go and buy the leash, you will have a back up service.

    Len/Reef

The customer service at Reef is super!!

I bought 2 leashes and both broke, but I still support Reef, due to their HIGH levels of service!

Len (from Reef) organised that the leashes be dropped in my hometown, as I bought it in another town.

A big THANK YOU to Len and Reef for excellent service!!

    Cheers,

Yup, still got my Reef Ignition Fullsuit and it's going fine, granted I don't use it too often though.
Constructive criticism is important, destructive criticism is not. Help Len out and he'll bring you improved products, at least he listens to the assorted comments unlike some other Companies that couldn't care.
Aside from that, I've used all the NOMAD Leashes and i've only snapped one, still got the one I used in Hawaii and it's still going strong, super comfy too!

Heavy dudes! I just read this thread now and it's like a boxing match in here.

My bro bought a Reef bicep leash a while ago and the plastic bit snapped on the first surf. He def doesn't surf anything heavy as he's pretty much just getting into bodyboarding. He took the leash back to the surf shop where he bought it and it was replaced without any hassle. The replacement has been going strong ever since and I've taken his board out at some decent size Hoek without any problem.

The bottom line is that manufacturing defects happen and batches of product can be weaker than others. It happens everywhere and when it does it all comes down to how the company deals with your complaint. I believe that Reef are very proactive in this respect and that they take people's complaints seriously. I've had various Reef products over the years and I've never had reason to complain.

Hell I had my car serviced a few weeks ago and suddenly it went through 6 pints of oil!!! Took it to Toyota who found that the oil filter they had fitted was defective. Turns out that the batch of filters they received from the manufacturer were bum. They replaced it the same day after taking my car in without a booking or any prior phone call and didn't charge me a cent. Even got a free vacuum and car wash out of it 8)
