    Great white 'ate anti-shark device'
    Pia Akerman | March 01, 2008

AN electronic device designed to ward sharks away from surfers failed so spectacularly during a trial off South Africa that it was eaten by a great white.

An inquest heard yesterday the Shark Shield surf model was activated on a float carrying bait when the 3.6m female shark approached. Rather than being deterred by the device, the shark, under the gaze of the Natal Sharks Board, bit into it.

South Australian Deputy State Coroner Tony Schapel yesterday heard of the test failure during the inquest into the death of Jarrod Stehbens, who was taken by a great white shark while diving off Glenelg in South Australia in 2005.

The inquest has turned into a trial of Shark Shield devices, hearing concerns that the electronic fields generated to repel sharks may attract them.

Studying cuttlefish for the University of Adelaide at the time of his death, Stehbens had been provided with two Shark Shields on his dive boat by university staff - but he either didn't know they were there or chose not to use them.

University staff have told Mr Schapel they questioned the Shark Shields' efficacy and believed there might be long-term health risks from using them. As a result, the devices were not compulsory.

Rod Hartley, director of Sea Change Technology, which manufactures the Shark Shields, yesterday took the stand to defend his product.

"There is no doubt whatsoever that it does not attract sharks," he said.

He told Mr Schapel he believed a disgruntled surfer had started the rumour.

"Nobody wearing a Shark Shield has ever been attacked by a shark," he added.

Mr Hartley said the failed South African test on the surf unit - which has been held back from release into the marketplace - was due to a problem with the electrode's configuration. The device was now packaged with a large disclaimer warning it would only repel sharks when the surfer was still in the water waiting for a wave.

"The surf product only can be guaranteed to work when it's stationary, not when it's surfing in the wave or paddling," Mr Hartley said.

CSIRO shark expert Barry Bruce has told the inquest the shark that killed Stehbens was in "full predatory strike" mode and would have been nearly impossible to deter. His body was never recovered.

Mr Schapel will publish his findings at a later date.

    Dood!!!
Im sure i dont even hav to tell u wat im feelin right now
I hate sharks with all my heart.
Im sorry but i do,cant help it :?

The thought never even crossed my mind when i lived in Durban.
Surfed there without a care for around 4 or 5 yrs before i relocated to Ape Town.
Now i cant stop thinkin of them.
It ruins my vibe every session.

U see in Durbs u can get bitten and end up with a fatass scar.
In the Cape u get bitten.........and ur left with just ur torso!!!!

Was In Umhlanga in October and I had the best surfs.
    Didnt even think of them.
Pure bliss for sumone with such a massive paranoia of sharks.
I met this guy the other week who is a master practitioner of neuro-linguistic programming.
He says he can remap the way i think of them.
The fear will still be there, but just be more realistic in such a way that yes I will know that theyr out there & that theyr dangerouse etc but so that it wont be this dark cloud hanging over my freesurfs all the time, the time when i should be free of feeling anything of the sort!!!

PS:I cant be the only one can i?

ja they are out there and we are in there waters.. dude id only be scared if surfing super sketchy spots!! apart from that dont even think about them really while out in the water even here in CT. Would say if you paddling around Hoek and esp Dunes or even Sunsets then think about it ;)

apart from that in CT... hmm the rest doesnt bother me and you had more odds to get killed or attacked by your toaster in your kitchen!

Thousands of people die in car crashes in SA every year..but i get in my car and drive to work in peak traffic everyday without even thinking about it, and I absolutely hate sitting in traffic. I think I'd much rather die at the hands(or teeth!) of a shark, doing something I love, than die in a lame-ass car crash, the first option just seems so much more honourable.

just love and respect the ocean and whats in it as its only our play ground

ps wade, you can see me naked only if you agree to carry my fins

um... well most of you are already so off topic.
I posted this out of interest, as allot of you know this site is vistied by more that just saffas, and well thanks to modern media the whole world knows we have flying white sharks that stop at nothing. If you ever surf the burg (ok schlong board the burg) you will see allot of okes with shark shields on and if you ever mission up to the transkei you will also encounter allot of shark shields on both locals and tourists.

The point of my post was to create awareness that these expensive electrocution contaptions dont work. The Natal sharks board put their cocks on a block last year saying that they repel sharks and well now it seems, Time has proved them wrong and there are a few Eunighs wondering around in Durban today... and they didnt loose their cocks to muti sungormas or anything.

Fact... in South Africa you stand more of a chance of getting killed by a Out of contol Taxi, a Drunk driver, a hijacker, a tik kop, a kiddie rapist, a 28 on a mission, an anofeles mosqueto, Drug resistant TB, a member of our loverly corrupt police force, Zumas forhead, exploding street lights or manto running you down with her garlic and beetroot HIV cure.

I am a false bay boytie, i have grown up with that nasty white shark, i respect their position on the food chain and if i get chomped, well so be it, God rather take me fast than let me get gunned down for R10 and my cellphone.

    In saying that.

I want to wish Rob Grey a speedy recovery from his head on with a bus a few weeks back, Dude you have been in my prayers.
And i want to extent my condolences to Peter Lambert and his family for the loss of his mom.

Happy days and enjoy headbutting the cape sharks.

Ja ok maybe we r in their backyards, but they could do us the favour and ask us nicely to leev if they dont want us there LOL.
I suppose i'll just hav to let fate play its course.
Ur right when u say its a better way to go.

Just wanna give my condolences to Peter too.
Ur in our thoughts and prayers.
I just recently lost my Dad too.
I know its hard, but it gets better brother.

so we shouldnt by that thing then .

is that what this is about? Cause for me surfing in the false bay is a no go and i respect that its not my home rather the sharks
and all that and thats why i dont surf there. Its like swimming in the zambezi in croc infested waters. So to be honset if there was something like that , that actually did work i would seriously consider buying, it cause like mr craigtri.. im one f£$%ng paranoide monkey when i surf. BUT EVERYWHERE!! any shadow, seaweed seal i get freacked . almost adds more excitement to the surf but still aint nice to be on edge all the time. TO have a device that would atleast settle the mind would be wicked i think.

i love the creatures . most awsome living thing iv come across but they are freaky

Dood we def should never surf together cos we'll just freak each other out LOL.

But like Mark Clark says, there def r breaks where i feel a hell of alot more at eez.
I will NEVER surf Muizenberg EVER,Long beach and that strecth is sketchy for me too but up the west coast im cool with.
Must say I feel most comfortable at Lands or Glen tho.

Maybe i should go see that guy after all?
