What do you guys think is better and why.
I prefer a crescent because it gives more control and i normally slide out on a bat

    Awe bru

yea man ive been surfing a bat for long now and am goin to switch to crescent. bat is good for spins but crescent is the bomb for drawing lines and coming out of a scoop!!

    enjoy!!

I've always ridden a crescent tail, but have tried bats quite a few times and personally find that crescent tails out perform bat tails in all regards.I've never felt that the sharpness of a crescent tail has inhibited my spins at all.

Give me my bat anyday, cos then I have that extra section at the end to put my drink down on while I'm in the barrel

The bats i have had have all been great really.
Nice and loose for the spins etc... but also had good bite cos they all had nice channels.
The Custom X dug was pretty sick aswell as the manta Skipp a few yrs back.
In fact every one of Skips stix hav been good allround performers and havnt really lacked anything in any areas i feel.

Theez days im rockin the crescent tho......cant beat it when it comes to DK.
My only question is which is better in terms of crescent?
Full crescent or those lil squared of ends u kno?

    hmmm....any thoughts?

    Lakka.

Been seeing a lot of guys stating their views above, but what it really comes down to is personal preference I think. I myself like the Bat Tails just because I feel that on big flips I have a larger surface area to land with, but that's not even the case, it's just a block that I have mentally that kinda keeps me going back to my Bat Tails.

You can make the type of tail you're riding with work for you in any conditions by just changing your style of riding slightly, adjusting to the conditions. Yes, a Crescent will hold the line of the barrel better in heavy hollow waves, but like Jeff Hubbard, if you watch him closely on these types of waves you see him shift his weight slightly to the back of the board and drop his outside elbow onto the rail too, enabling him to hug the face of the wave and control the board a little easier on the take offs, but ounce in the barrel, its back to his natural style, watch Ross McBride too he also does this in smaller waves to control himself in the barrel. With slight adjustments to style your board will perform just like any other, but the features that make a board, are the ones that are most comfortable for you personally!

Bat VS Crescent....an ongoing saga with no real answer...you could lay out all the Pros and Cons, but would that really change your mind if you haven't tested it yourself?

Ja i get u but its pretty much proven that a crescent tail is more DK inclined and that a bat is more prone.
I can ride any of them but i prefer bat 4 prone and crescent for DK cos of their respective attributes for both styles.
However ur spot on when it comes to preference.
I suppose its all the detail we need on the topic really :)

i reckon if ur gonna go 50/50 get sumthin like the skipp.
but then again.....thats my preference LOL.

    stay kiff. :)

    Hey bboard1,

Do u slide out when u DK on the bat or wat?
    Thats my problem too.
Unless the channels r deep enuff it happens alot in bigger waves.
I slide out on crescent tails too if they dont hav channels.
    I need channels.

I hav also pondered about the choice of fins u use affecting it all.
I use vipers cos i feel they hav a rudder effect,or it might just b in my mind too
all those other dolphin shaped ones make me slide too.
Dunno how okes do it hey.

    Anyways,thats my theories.

Absolutely...A Crescent Tail is way better for DK because the rail has more of a pivot thus giving you the edge that will perform like a fin cutting into the open face of a wave easier than the slow curving Bat Tail...

But here's a little spanner to throw in the works...look at Sascha Specka, he rides his Bat Tail for both DK and Prone and the guy rips something silly on both...now how do you justify that...a slight change in style, pracice on your equipment and for his sake, a multitude of talent! Respect!

Ja a bat can really work good for both prone and DK if it suits ur style i think.
I used to love bats when they first started comin out.
Any one remember the wave rebel brian wise, the custom x dug, manta skipp, manta shogan, sabre all those boards killed!!!

I used to surf with Sasha for yrs at Glen beach when he was still a lil pikinini.
Let me tell u sumthin for nuthin.....that guy will shred on absolutely anything he's given!!!!
He's probably found the template he like most and that werks for him in anything.
But u might find that he too also has to adjust his riding for either prone or DK.
Maybe he needs to lat back a lil when he drops the knee?
Sumthin i hav noticed alot of guys doin to sort of "slow things down" just b4 the critical movement.
Only he will know tho :?

I been thinking of gettin another bat but havnt cos im just not sure which shape to go for cos there are sooooo many out there.
So if i was to be safe i would go 4 a Elemenopee skipp kinda shape cos i've had his previouse ones and they all rocked.

    im spent LOL

There is a super nice photo of specker at waimea shorey in the new movement. Cresants are da bomb

I heard once...... long long ago, that bat tails are kuk in onshore waves... and cresents work better in the chop.

What ever happened to the Square tails.. Had a custom X STC back in the day, man that board loved INDO.

ps i ride bat tails of all different types, even have kept boards cos of the different type of bat tails, some are big and others arnt. I too have a block against crecent tails, maybe cos bat man was my fav supa hero when i was a lighty.

Round nose and full crescent,NO CHANNELS!!!!
Dunno how i did it.

I've only ridden the LMNOP Mcfly bat and i slid out while going prone every time, maybe it's just because i'm used to my crescent i don't know but i couldn't get the board to bite into the face, it was like i was riding my old laser 2 that had no channels. I have also heard of a delta tail but i have no idea what it looks like, can anyone elaborate of maybe add a pic.

    Delta wat?????
havnt heard of it bro sorry.
U ever see the manta shogun???
It had sumthin ridiculous like 5 or six channels i think.
My buddy Braden had one yrs back.

Actually i think my lil bro still has one in the garage at home.
If its there i'll post a pic for u tonight ok.

That thing will never slide out im pretty sure of it LOL!!!!

    Laters bruv.

Oh if anyone does hav any pics of a delta pleez post them!!!

    B kiff.

How long u been riding just out of interest?
Cos the brothers might be right and u may just hav to adjust ur style accordingly.
Cos i know exactly wat its like to buy a P*#s expensive board and it doesnt werk 4 u in the end.
Layin too far forward to try and gun it all the time could be ur downfall too maybe cos the tail and channels wouldnt be gettin enuff or too little touch to bite as u say. :?

check it out next time u go for a surf or even ask sumone to watch u maybe.

I've been riding for like 4 years. It was just a 1 time thing with my mates board really but i got so frustrated that i swapped boards back in like 10 min. It prob was just a style thing and i'll try it next time.

I dont remember the manta shogun but I do remember the manta concept. It had a wing tail and quad channels. (4 channels). Pretty sweet board but never got to ride one. Got some pics of it tho.

I personally dont mind if it is a bat tail or crescent. I ride almost 100% dk. Channels do make a difference but they are not critical to me at all. I used to ride bat tail and channels for a long time. For the past five years only flat bottom crescent tails. They are all good.

My best board ever was a manta ballard dk model. It had bat tail, channels and a round nose with one rail piece nose. It was the shit!! Came out the same year as the roach that craigtrilivas likes so much. Man that was a sick board!!

I even had a square tail ben holland board and that thing was pretty sweet on the dk too. Very loose for throwing the tail out!!! 8)

The Delta Tail is that of the Science MS1, the rounded end of the Bat is more pointed and protrudes off the back of the board more than your usual Bat Tail, kind of like a pin tail almost, just not as hectic.

    here's my 5 cents worth.

ive only ever had bat tails so cant say which is better etc. but i can tell you that at times on bigger surf i have slid out and been bashed on the head by the lip and i learned very quickly to really dig my rail in and hold it hard. you take a few on the head and you learn very quick!!! its easier to hold a rail than take a beating!!!!!

    go dig that rail in.
