It was a low-scoring heat, if I remember correctly he needed something like a 3point ride but just didn't manage to get that last good wave. He finished in 3rd position.
Conditions look clean but not all time Pipe, breaking a bit weird and it doesn't look too consistent.
Hold thumbs for all the Saffas still to ride!

Time now: 21:55 SAST .... Darren Halse up in the next heat.
  • KellyKelly
    February 2008
OK ... think Halse squeezed through in 2nd ... he was lying 2nd towards the end but after the last few exchanges no heat changes were called and quite frustratingly they are not calling heat results after each heat.

22:30 SAST: Wesley Fischer up in 5 mins.

Midnight SAST: Round 3 coming up with Vijay Maharaj up in heat #1.
  • KellyKelly
    February 2008
    Round 3 - Heat 1

With 4 mins to go and a high score of 1.67, Vijay picks up a backdoor screamer, does the disappearing act and just when you think he's a gonner, he pops out with a little roll as he exits. 8.17 and moves into first and stays there to win the heat.

Well done buddy. Darren Halse in this next heat.

    Round 3 - Heat 2

OK ... things hotting up and the guys still moving through their heats.

Darren Halse gets second from Jake Stone who took the heat quite convincingly. Halse picked up a sweet barrel for a 6.5 with 5 mins to go and needing a 3 pointer to move into second he picked off a smaller one to get his 3.67 and move on to round #4.

00:50 SAST: Wes Fischer is up in the heat after this. If anyone is following, let us know how the guys do from no onwards as I have to shut down.

If anyone knows the other results from Round 3 please post them.

02:20 SAST: Vijay Maharaj & Darren Halse just took to the water in the same heat.

    Round 4 - Heat 1

Halse opens his heat with a clean in, clean out tube and whips a high speed reverse - 8.0. All class. Missed the take-off but his second wave is a bit smaller, goes for an air reverse and just loses it in the whitewater. Scores a 4.67 and is way ahead of the competition at this point.

5 mins left and Vijay is MIA and needs to pull a rescue mission like the last heat. AND HE DOES as I'm typing ... 3 mins left Vijay bags a sick, clean barrel and lays into a hard cuttie into forward spin, very smooth and a contest roll on the inside section ... 8.3 and he moves into 2nd.

Halse ends it with a solid backdoor barrel on the hooter, disappears, exits clean and launches into a heavy bash reverse which he doesn't make --- scores 8.4.

South Africa take 1st & 2nd in that heat - well done guys. Although Vijay --- next heat, try get a decent back-up wave buddy!!!

    1st Darren Halse (ZAF)
    2nd Vijay Maharaj (ZAF)
    ??? Tom Wilson (AUS)
    ??? Daute Perdomo (SPN)

    Round 4 - Heat 4

Wes starts off slow with a 1.5 but gets a smoker on his second and screams through the barrel, across the flat section in to the oncoming section where he lost speed so cuts back, goes right and rolls off the cloes out. No score announced but moves into first.

In the next exchange, Cade Sharp (Aus) moves into first with some solid riding.

Wes grabs a backdoor one, comes around the section scoops under the lip for a bit of a barrel and comes out through the lip - a bit messy and not high scoring. With 5 mins left Wes, heads in to paddle around but doesn't make it out for another in time. He goes through in second with Cade Sharp winning.

    1st - Cade Sharp (AUS)
    2nd - Wesley Fischer (ZAF)
    3rd - Happy Zurkowski (HAW)
4th - Elias Suarez Pola (SPN)

    Round 4 - Heat 5 - Andre Botha

A bit of a slow heat, Goncalo Campos starts off with a good barrel but it is Michael Chapple who moves into the lead with a few decent waves. Botha grabs a few extremely average rides by his standards but hasn't had the waves to do anything with. 5 mins left and he needs a 2 pointer to move from 3rd. He picks up a decent barrel and rolls out - trademark - grabs 6 odd points and moves into the lead. Finishes off with a small inside one that he plays with for a few seconds of barrel time that earns him 4.33 and moves on through the rounds fairly confidently.

    1. Andre Botha (ZAF)
    2. Michael Chapple (AUS)
    3. Goncalo Campos (POR)
    4. Adam Wright (AUS)

    Round 5 - Heat 1

After a good first day for the South Africans it is Darren Halse up first on day 2 and on paper, the competition is getting tougher.

Mitch Rawlins wastes no time and guns into a backdoor one which he inverts earning a 7.0. Darren counters a minute later with a bomb, scoring a deep Pipe tube, clean exit into a cutback which the judges award an 8.5. Jake Stone bags a 6.83 and the heat is definitely on - following the action, trying to give a blow-by-blow and do some work in the background just isn't going to happen. LOL

Mitch grabs a medium size one which he rolls and earns 6.0 and follows up with an 8.17 which I missed to move comfortably into the lead.

Halse is in second with a 3.27 as his second wave but by no means comfortably. 1.45 seconds left and in the end it is only Jean Ferreira who gets a small one and Mitch wins, with Darren in second. Well done! Wes up next.

    Round 5 - Heat 2

Heat 2 starts slow with a few low scoring waves. The swell has dropped overnight, it's clean but you need to pick the right ones. Vijay's first was definitely not the right one and fades out on him --- although a typical back-up wave for him at 1.0. So far Vijay has progressed through 2 rounds with one sick wave and a second wave of no higher than 1.67.

Dave Crowley picks up the first wave of note, backdoor barrel into invert off the close-out and bags 8.33.

Vijay comes alive again in the latter half of the heat and scoops a sick backdoor screamer --- long, disappearing barrel and exits into a little forward off the lip. 9.67 from the judges. Second highest score of the contest.

Crowley comes back with a backdoor barrel of his own, forward off the lip and roll on the inside - 9.10.

A sweet Pipe lefthander for Vijay, gets under the lip and ARS's out and back under again for a cover-up.

A 2 horse race, impressive from Vijay is the call from the commentators --- well done bru. Keep the foot on the gas from here on buddy.

    Round 5 - Heat 3

Alex Bunting opens the heat with a sweet Pipe barrel for 7.33 and lays down the challenge.

Wes goes right at backdoor and boosts a HUGE roll at backdoor off the barrelling section, into the flats and my guts hurts for him but he's snuck straight back under the lip we see bottom deck again as he rolls out the barrel. Bags an 8.0 from the judges as the crowds hoots.

Somewhere I've missed Ruben Quinones' 6.5 ride.

Wes goes left on a smoker but just too deep.

Bunting moves into the lead with a backdoor barrel where he powers through a few sections and rolls through the lip as it closes out. 5.83

Local boy Abraham Concepcion is out of touch and in fourth.

Wes goes right again on a medium sized one, but clean --- sweet little barrel and slow rolls off the close the close out. A 6.90 hands the lead back to him.

10 seconds on the clock and Wes bags a close-out back to the beach with first place under the belt. Once again - good result ... well done! Botha in the heat after next.

    Round 5 - Heat 4

Andre Botha is up in this heat and after 2 inconsequential opening rides from Tyler Ching-Johnson and Felipe Perusin, Dre picks up a decent backdoor tube and rolls out for a 6.5 pointer.

Hawaiian Tyler Ching-Johnson grabs a 4.83 to grab the early lead but Felipe Perusin from Brazil grabs a solid backdoor barrel which he drives through for a 7.17 and leap frogs into first.

7 mins remaining and Andre's in 3rd but he cards a 5.33 and moves into first, with a wave which I missed. The web cast may be getting a bit hammered by traffic and I mised another barrel by Dre which equals his 5.33 so doesn't count.

Workman-like from Botha, looks comfortable but on paper he does just squeeze out a challenge from Felipe Perusin to take the heat.

    1st Andre Botha (ZAF)
    2nd Felipe Perusin (BRZ)
    3rd David Mantellini (VEN)
    4th Tyler Ching-Johnson (HAW)

Well done - that's the end of the South African's in Round 5 and they all progress onto Round 6.

    Round 6 - Heat 1

Vijay comes up against Richard Diaz from Canary Islands, semi-finalist from Confitel, who grabs the first wave with a 1.33. Also in the heat is Mitchell Rawlins from Australia and Jorge Colomer from Puerto Rico who is a bit of an unknown to me but is the seeded rider in this heat. He grabs a deep one but all he can do is have to bottom turn around the section.

The first five minutes produces no waves and Vijay is sitting with 0.67 as he paddles into a pretty sweet one, builds some speed, sets himself up and nails a back-flip for a 5.50. Follows up with a small cover-up for a 3.00 and moves into the lead as Rawlins grabs the wave of the heat so far, goes right at backdoor and launches a big invert but can't land it.

Colomer picks up a racey tube for a 5.17 and takes the lead as Rawlins finally grabs one at backdoor for a long barrel and sneaks out the front for a 7.17 moving him into the lead.

3.5 mins left and Vijay is into 3rd and needs a 3.67.

    Richard Diaz has a 1.33 and needs a 7.84.

Vijay picks up a real small one and only scores a 2.83 and Vijay's luck runs out. In impressive form but just missed out the wave he needed in this heat.

    1st Jorge Colomer (PRC) 10.67
    2nd Mitchell Rawlins (AUS) 9.77
    3rd Vijay Maharaj (ZAF) 8.50
    4th Richard Diaz (CNI) 1.33

    Round 6 - Heat 2

Big heat for Darren Halse and the two Aussies open with high scoring waves - Hardy cards a 9.3 and Dave Crowley bags a 7.0 and a 8.17 for his second wave as the web cast decides to play up.

Darren opens with a 5.33 on a backdoor wave, spins in the pocket.

Another, backdoor wave for Darren and he moves into second with a big invert off a solid section which earns him a 6.6. Hardy is only sitting in third on one wave of 9.3 so Halse needs to improve on his highest score.

Spencer Skipper has been fairly quiet and sits with a 2.0 and a 6.0.

Crowley bags another barrel for 6.67 which won't count for him.

Next wave goes to Halse who powers through a long barrel ... a medium sized one, which he rides to the beach but he betters his worst wave score by earning a 6.77 and forcing Hardy into needing a 4 pointer with just 1 minute left. Hardy goes right as he scratches into a small one, rolls but it's not enough and Darren moves through in second and we have a shock upset with Ryan Hardy in third and Spencer Skipper in fourth.

    1st David Crowley (AUS) 15.17
    2nd Darren Halse (ZAF) 13.37
    3rd Ryan Hardy (AUS) 12.97

    Round 6 - Heat 3

Wesley Fischer was next up in this heat which I missed as the web cast went down from one buzzer to the next. From the live scores it seems like waves were tough to come by in this heat, except for Wes who bagged three high scoring rides and finished with a heat score of 14 ahead of Cade Sharp from Australia in 2nd with a combined score of 5.3 and both seeded riders fall victim in this heat yet again.

    1st Wesley Fischer (ZAF) 14.00

    Round 6 - Heat 5

Andre Botha takes to the water and after a very slow heat 4, he'll be hoping for a few better ones. His first 3 rides read as a 2.5, next a small barrel which he muscles a roll out of as it pinches shut and earns a 4.17 but is straight back out and picks up a small backdoor one but it's a deep, deep barrel and when you think it's too late he pops out and earns a 5.27.

Thomas Robinson sits with two 3 pointers in second and Ivan Gouveia Valeira with a single 4.83 ride is in fourth as the call is 6.5 mins left.

A few scratchy exchanges in the last 5 minutes but nothing worth mention and the heat ends as follows with another 1st place for Andre.

    1st Andre Botha (ZAF) 9.44
    2nd Thomas Robinson (AUS) 7.57

    Round 7 - Heat 1

A predicted increase in swell size and Halse paddles out to some pretty epic conditions. Still 15 minute heats, so you still want a good one in the first 5.

Two 3 point opening exchanges for Bitzer and Colomer and with 11 minutes left Halse grabs his first - with priority he should really have gone on the second set - it was a smaller one, forward in the pocket, cover-up and a roll earns him a 5.83 but it is Lourenco who scores the bigger set and a good barrel which he claims as he exits and bags a 7.5.

On the halfway mark, Halse is in 4th with only one wave and needing a 1.24 to move into 2nd.

Lourenco gets a 4.17 and a few low scoring waves for the other competitors but Halse gets his second wave, a big looping roll and rides it through to the inside. 5.33 from the judges.

The last few minutes sees Halse and Colomer scrapping for a wave with Colomer incurring interference. Lourenco wins and goes through with Halse in second.

    1st Silvano Lourenco (POR) 11.67
    2nd Darren Halse (ZAF) 11.16

Barcellos is the man out the blocks early with a 6.17. Wes picks up a starter ... carve into spin, spin and cards a 3.50 and moves to second. Benco has a 1.67 and Vega still waiting for his first.

Fischer picks up a backdoor wave and gets his highest heat score of 6.50 which he retains till the end to claim second but it is Barcellos who gets another cooker and stops Wes' string of first places. No prizes for first though and another Saffa through to Round 7.

    1st Paulo Barcellos (BRZ) 14.00

    Round 7 - Heat 5

Botha, Winchester and the two Canary Islands guys Hernandez and Rey. The islands are producing some of the new names on the tour and this is a big heat - these guys ride heavy waves well.

Botha grabs a 5.50 but it is a backdoor combo of an invert and roll which earns a 7.50 and he sits pretty comfortable in first.

    It's getting pretty solid!!!

With 3 minutes left Winchester has 2 OK waves to put him in second with Hernandez in third with a 6.00 and a 1.50.

Last minute wave for Hernandez ... he bags a 6.83 and knocks Winny out to grab second and Botha powers on with another first place.

    1st Andre Botha (ZAF) 13.00
    2nd Ivan Hernandez (CNI) 12.83
    3rd Dave Winchester (AUS) 10.50

    Round 8 - Heat 2

Halse up against Damian King (AUS), Mike Stewart (HAW) and Pierre-Louis Costes (FRA) ... this is a big one and the wind is producing some classic Pipe conditions.

King sets the pace with a 6.83, Stewart cards a 3.17, 2.00 and a 6.83 of his own as the early lead see-saws. But it is Darren who busts out on his second wave carding an 8.67 with a big ARS on a left-hander which puts him in first. King grabs a 4.5 with a through the lip roll while Costes grabs a 7.83 and scoops another for a clean mid-size Pipe barrel for 5.17 and the lead.

Stewart in 4th - waiting for a bomb. King spins into the tube on a backdoor one but gets caught up and can't come out.

Last second wave for Halse but Stewart blatantly drops in on Halse and incurs an interference. Interesting. Both were too deep really and King picks up the end section but can't make it count.

Costes wins with Halse second, both moving on to the Quarter Finals and it is the two past champs who exit.

    1st Pierre-Louis Costes (FRA) 13.OO

    Round 8 - Heat 3

A long wait for McCarthy but he's up finally against 2 Brazilians and 1 Portuguese rider.

Barcellos starts on the buzzer with a backdoor barrel for 5.67 but it is Pinheiro from Portugal who virtually secures a place through with a 9.17, followed by a 7.50. McCarthy rolls at backdoor for a 4.83 and gets a sweet little tube to spin going left at Pipe for 4.67. Neither high enough if he wants to move through and it is his next wave where he racks up a 6.50 on a left which is not followed be the camera man who follows the backdoor rider who doesn't come out.

Barcellos nails a Pipe barrel for 6.83 to move into second.

Pinheiro seems to be getting all the good ones and gets a sweet barrel for 5.50.

McCarthy is in 3rd needing a 6.01 to move into second but the heat ends without another wave. Unlucky bru!

    1st Hugo Pinheiro (POR) 16.67

Dallas Singer (AUS) is on fire!!! Scoring a 9.23 and a 9.73 with two classic Pipe barrels. Wesley Fischer goes right on the second of Dallas' rides and cards an 8.50 of his own. The race is on for second which is currently held by Wesley but two talented riders in Oliveira and Jesus waiting on a few decent waves.

Wes grabs a deep Pipe one, just scoops under the lip, rides high for a long barrel and sneaks out cleanly - top skills earns him 8.73. It's never over till it is over nut the results look set for this heat as 3rd and 4th positions are being combo'd (i.e. need more than 10 points to move into 2nd so need to improve both their scoring rides).

Well done Wes - good enough to win many a heat but Dallas did kill it.

    1st Dallas Singer (AUS) 18.96
    2nd Wesley Fischer (ZAF) 17.23

    Round 8 - Heat 5

While Fischer is being touted the giant killer, Botha is attracting bets for the title already and gets the best of the opening exchanges with an 8.67 and 5.83. Novy bags a 6.67 and Lavernhe a 4.50.

Dre cards another decent score of 6.50 but Novy counters with an 8.77 to sneak into the lead. Game on.

Although that is how it ends. Lavernhe gives it a go and grabs a 7 odd pointer but not enough to challenge and Novy takes it with Dre dropping his first heat of the contest.

We may officially have the lowest heat score of the contest with a 1.17 - been there done that, Showell was out of sync and would be wishing to run through that heat again.

    1st Michael Novy (AUS) 15.44

    Quarter Final #1

M'kay ... the 2 Saffa's Fischer and Halse take on Player and Pinheiro.

Opening exchanges put Player comfortably out front with 2 opening rides of 6.33 & 7.50.

    Halse gets a 1.00 and 4.33.
Fischer bags 3.83 and a 4.23 with a roll. The wind has got onto Pipe and it is a little messy and not nearly as perfect as early conditions.

Pinheiro adds a 4.03 to his opening ride of 5.00 and takes second from Fischer.

Player, Pinheiro, Fischer & Halse is how it currently stands and the South Africans need some waves. Both pick up one but are only one pointers. It is Pinheiro who snags one for an 8.50 with a sick ARS and extends the gap.

13.50 mins remaining so there is time but with barrels pinching and some fading out, it is a matter of being selective (or lucky).

9 mins left and Player gets a small one and backflips for a 6.33.
Halse picks up the next and sticks a sticks a sweet ARS for a 6.33 of his own.
Fischer goes right and rolls through a backdoor lip for 4.50.

    6 mins remaining.

Pinheiro gets a 5.50 and combined with is 8.50 moves him into the lead. And that is how it ends - Pinheiro carries on his form from his last heat, Player quite comfortable as he should be and these two South Africans find themselves on the losing end for the first time - the nature of a knock-out contest means that is thanks for coming guys but it is not without making an impression and grabbing a few $$$'s for the efforts.

The guys will no doubt be disappointed but a 9th for Darren and 13th for Wesley after having to compete through the early rounds is very credible and following the commentary through the event, these guys have made a name with some impressive performances to get through their heats.

    Well done!

    1st Hugo Pinheiro (POR) 14.00
    2nd Ben Player (AUS) 13.83
    3rd Darren Halse (ZAF) 10.66
    4th Wesley Fischer (ZAF) 8.73

Botha up against Jeff Hubbard and the two Brazilians, Luis Villar and Uri Valadao in Heat #4.

    Quarter Final 2

A copy-cat of QF 1, this time it was the 2 Aussies Singer and Crowley who had been killing their way through to the QF's but were unable to get the waves in this round. Costes, coming off knee surgery and not 100% took the heat fairly convincingly but gets smashed at backdoor and injures his back which doesn't appear too bad. The semi-finals is looking like a truly international affair.

    1st Pierre-Louis Costes (FRA) 13.27
    2nd Paulo Barcellos (BRZ) 10.94
    3rd Dallas Singer (AUS) 9.27
    4th David Crowley (AUS) 8.93

    Quarter Final 3

Wayhey! The GT vs McGee show for a bit of nostalgia but in the end it is GT who nails it comfortably with Kainoa only managing to string together a run of low scoring waves in the trying conditions - not quite the Pipe which he thrives on. Novy gets the better of Centeno for a place in the semi's.

    1st Guilherme Tamega (BRZ) 14.33
    2nd Michael Novy (AUS) 12.83
    3rd Manuel Centeno (POR) 11.90
    4th Kainoa McGee (HAW) 6.66

    Quarter Final 4

The surf may not be as classic as the morning but the competition is stepping up a gear and in a heavy heat, Hubb starts with a 6.00, Valadao a 7.17 but it is Botha who does grab the early lead with a 7.83.

A 20 minute heat in trashy Pipe which doesn't look easy to pick is going to be difficult to make sure you're getting the winning waves. Probably not many more at home at Pipe than Hubb & Botha.

Hubb gets a 6.30 & Valadao a 6.33 put him in first and Botha to 3rd.

    Early days.

A few exchanges not worth mentioning but Hubb gets a backdoor one and busts a big roll for a 7.77. Villar inverts backdoor, very classy but a smaller wave earning him a 5.17. Valadao grabs the next set wave which is bigger and launches a big ARS - awesome! 6.63 and knocks Botha from second.

Botha needs a 6 or better.

And then nothing, the clock runs down and where you would put money on Botha to nail a 6 on anything decent, he just cannot find anything and exits prematurely, leaving the punters shocked and the bookies smiling.

Good run through the rounds buddy, unlucky in the end.

    1st Jeff Hubbard (HAW) 14.07
    2nd Uri Valadao (BRZ) 13.80
    3rd Andre Botha (ZAF) 12.00
    4th Luis Villar (BRZ) 10.94

    Semi Final 1

Semi #1 probably saw the two riders progress who were more in form through the previous heats. Pinheiro has been killing it and Barcellos has definitely been one of the stand-outs although, I will admit to having missed a few of the waves. Although credible, a bit of a shock exit for defending World Champ Ben Player.

    1st Hugo Pinheiro (POR) 14.40
    2nd Paulo Barcellos (BRZ) 13.30
    3rd Ben Player (AUS) 11.75
    4th Pierre-Louis Costes (FRA) 8.50

    Semi Final 2

Semi #2 saw the last of the Australian charge and Novy couldn't quite get it together in this heat. Tamega looked comfortable behind Valadao but it took the second 10 of the contest from Jeff Hubbard to rescue him. Tamega ended tie on points with Uri and lost out on the count back.

    1st Jeff Hubbard (HAW) 17.40
    2nd Uri Valadao (BRZ) 15.25
    3rd Guilherme Tamega (BRZ) 15.25
    4th Michael Novy (AUS) 13.00

    Final

With in excess of 15,000 webcast viewers earlier in the day, I expect a few thousand more jumped on for the final which ended up a little too much for the streaming server. Let's hope some companies are taking note of how popular and the IBA can get to some sponsors behind our 2008 tour and they can invest in improving the web casts.

Unfortunately, no sound either so I've added the heat sheet below.

Pinheiro was the only man not to take the heat lead at some point in this final, which carded up some really high scoring rides. The two 9.25's from the Brazilians gave them the opportunity to clinch it with a second high score and it was Paulo Barcellos who has been in amazing form through-out the event who sealed it with a 7.75 on his final wave. Jeff Hubbard took second with 4 high scoring waves and Uri Valadao was left trying to improve on his 6.65 to claim third.

Well done to our champ and the guys in the final! They lead the 2008 tour and the rest of the field will be playing catch-up in Brazil.

Last but not least, well done to the organisers. Been a pleasure to follow the event online and hope to see this improve in the future. Props to Jason & Terry too for their great commentary.

    1st PAULO Barcellos (BRZ) 17.OO
    2nd Jeff Hubbard (HAW) 16.65
    3rd Uri Valadao (BRZ) 15.9O
    4th Hugo Pinheiro (POR) 1O.4O
