Well done to this stand-up for taking beach-bums across the world a step backwards to the time when people saw us all as stoners...

Stuff you man, I'm not making him out to be a druggie.
He was an excellent surfer and the only reason he died was because he was intoxicated, If you wasn't chances are he would have judged the wave right and survived.

Hate to burst your bubble dude but methamphetamine is not the kinda thing that you become intoxicated with for medicinal purposes...

IE: if you are doing drugs you are by the simplest of definitions a druggy...

I don't deny he was a great surfer, he must have been, I wouldn't be out there in 50 foot GHOST TREES but if I was I'd be striaght of mind, don't feel sorry for him, he may have been alive today if he was straight but he made the choice not to be...

yea im with Ninja kid, its one thing to go surf massive waves when sober and confident in your own abilities, but to do it high is another story... esp as he could have put others at risk, ie lifeguards...

    I totally agree..

Now i know how they paddle out and take off on those 50ft monsters.. I thought no one in their right mind could possibly attempt something as ludicrous as that

Hahahah! I love the Darwin awards! My husband is always telling me unbelievably, outrageously funny stuff from them, in a weekly column in the newspaper!
I came upon this yesterday  What a nutter!

I heard a few years ago (when I first saw that last clip) that it was CGI done for a TV ad... can anyone confirm?
Personally I dig the way he surfs while a ship is wrecking in the background ;)

Thanks StJohn for putting the commercial up in it's entirety :)
I don't recall ever seeing the whole thing, only the surfing part as did probably many others as well.

YOU CAN GET ARRESTED HERE, FOR SURFING, BODYBOARDING OR BEING OUT IN THE WATER DURING STORM--HURRICANE & FLOODING CONDITIONS because of the amount of DEBREE IN THE WATER. Dangerous & rescues are not only risky but costly! A few arrests were made last season. Generally it is at beaches that can't handle the "load" thus the excessive debree that is pulled back out with the tide. However, there is always 1 or 2 numbskulls, who think they are invincible(or on meth/drugs), have no insurance, and get into a risky situation requiring a very dangerous and costly rescue. In the long run, the local government can't afford it and it puts the rescuers in danger as well. But there is not a problem going out at places that are accustomed to getting big surf and the shoreline can handle it as well. As you can see in this spliced video(surf truely that big would have obliterated the houses on the shore), not only is it being deceitful and suggestive, it gives the idea that it is ok, at a beach that can't handle it anyway and the debree would have been excessive. ;)
