Yellow Sands, One of my most awesome sessions EVER!

  • StJohnLombard_Bodyboarder
    January 2008
Went camping at yellow sands from friday last week and got back yesterday.

Only had 3 days of good swell. Monday Tuesday and Wednesday.

Heavy west winds 3 days solid. About a 4 foot swell, with about a 7, 8 foot face on monday morning.

Woke up at 4. Dragged my ass outta my tent, suited up and walked down to the beach( about 50m away from my camp site )

Sat on the sand and watched the sun rise over the bay. By 4:35 it was just light enough to see the swell and it was a nice swell. Hollow rights and slower, not so hollow BUT fun lefts into the river mouth. Water still dirty from the previous east winds. Swell Looked about 3 foot from the beach.

By 4:40 i was in the water and sitting backline waiting for some sets, I was greeted by sets of about an 8 foot face easy!! had 2 waves and paddled back out, It was 5am now and there were birds diving all round me, and about 11 dolphins 5m away jumping and playing in the swell One bumped me off my board! i shat myself! I was still the only one out, but 3 surfers had arrived at point( 10, 12 foot face swell EASY! A little too intimidating for me :P Had some nice right rides, with some pretty steep drop ins.. :!:

by 5:30 a surfer arrived, He had left point as it was getting pretty huge....
Friendly long boarder, about 50yo. We were sitting and chatting when all of a sudden he says "Oh Shit" i turn around to see one mother of a back wave :o already feathering and about to start breaking. We were about 6m away from it and i was paddling my ass off i was gonna be too late, so i started paddling left to try get to the section that hadn't formed yet, and as i come up to it i hit the bowling section of the swell, as i attempt a duckdive it sucks me up and smashes me under.... I was under for about 9secs and i honestly thought i was gonna drown, But I surfaced next to the surfer, Who was laughing his ass off at me... Anyway we had some more awesome waves, I timed a couple of them wrong and had some pretty sick wipe outs. By now it was 6:45 and 2 more surfers got in. and by now it was fully light. and i could tell it was gonna be a hot day.. but i decided to ignore the sun and carry on without putting cream on my face. By 8am the bay was getting too crowded for me. 5....6 people were in. and i prefer to surf alone. so i moved over to the far left hand site of the bay in front of the rock, A little spot called secret lefts( The larger sets end up here, and the sets come through with like a 5sec period between each swell, so you catch the last one of the set to avoid getting smashed by the rest. )and surfed on my own there for an hour or two before 2 people decided to invade my water space  I put up with them and carried on with my surf. Had some awesome rides, Lots of duckdiving.

By 11am the I could really feel the sun frying my skin but i stayed in the water....

I got out the water at 4pm that evening... Tired sore. and badly sun burnt.....

But all in all it was the best bodyboarding day of my life :D

Tuesday was a lil bit smaller but much the same, and Wednesday morning was smaller.

Bu wednesday afternoon the east wind had arrived and I watched as the swell got destroyed by mother nature.

    Will post pics later.

Anyone else on the east coast, surf on monday, Tuesday or Wednesday this past week??

LOL --- you absolute nutter!!! That is one long surf!

Try take a little more care in the sun though - I know what it is like, always just one more wave ... but go in grab some chow and something drink and head out later refreshed and you'll have a better session.

Rode Yellow Sands only once but it was firing and enjoyed the spot big time. Shot for the story!!!

Haha, Yeah I usually surf for about 6, 7 hours and usually leave so early that i don't have time for breakfast. on two occasions I've puked from having low blood sugar... :x

And I'm not the most responsible when it comes to sun care...

Raw skin on my face two days later after having this thick hard skin form on my face, and then flake off :| Leaving pink, bare and raw sensitive skin on my cheeks and nose.... The slightest touch stinks it :x

haha sounds good. talking about sun burn.I have a mate who used to jet ski and he'd get burnt through his helmet(motox style). so his nose would get the worst. He'd burn so bad he'd get blisters. Then he'd go back the next day and burn again. Every weekend it happened till the blisters got septic and and this yellow puss would run out of 'em. :P Was soo bad. All I needed to make me wanna always slap the creamy stuff on.

Oh and his excuse was that sun screen would stain the INSIDE of his helmet so he didn't wanna use it!!!

Use the cream bru, you'll thank yrself later on in life!

Ohh my goodness! Enjoyed the read and too stoked for you having such an unforgetable day in the surf, not to mention the regretable sting of it later(1st-2nd degree burns). :( I feel for ya bud! Been there--was always prideful of having the darkest tan-- continually told by my mother and olds--"You gonna get skin cancer some day--Plus ungodly wrinkles and leathery skin, as well!" Should have invested in Zinc Ointment and Antibacterial First-Aide ointment and retired rich! ;)
As a mum now of 3 daughters, I see to it that they where a 45-90, waterproof sunblock on their faces and bodies. We go through scads of cocoa butter year round as well(even in winter from the dryness and exposure to sun, snowboarding). It appears I have redeemed my skin through a healthy diet, sunblock/moisturizing and so important--drinking plenty of water however probably don't have the exceptional skin of the "lily whites" that forewent any sun exposure ;) !!
I cringe at the throught of making a surf session alone without prior nourishment and a good intake of water or preferably something with some electrolytes, as Gatoraide. Will help prevent dizzyness. My brother, now 46, an avid surfer, has some "hair-raising" experiences relating to a few lonely sessions! I remember him going out on Christmas day, alone, on the Central Coast of California, waking up to frost on the ground. Completely suited up, head covered and booties, he would still come back with "ice cream headaches" or "brain freeze". Always a good thing to take a buddy. :)
Not to make a "scare attempt" plea, however, always in the back of my mind as well:
    http://www.sharkattacks.com/news1.htm

Sounds so idylic taking a surf with the Dolphins! We have seen them on occasion, however SEALS, far more frequently. Had a bodyboarding friend, attacked by a seal at Salt Creek, Calif., a few years back, requiring stitches! He was fortunate to be able to swim to shore and run, attempting to hit at the seal with his board, as it was STILL latched onto his leg! Obviously, a smaller one of the species, however, clearly capable of doing damage. His experience is briefly mentioned in the article below. Here is an amusing and creatively written article letting us know the danger is NOT UNCOMMON(contributed to pollution), although, quite the opposite was verbalized to my friend, by the lifeguard.:
    Unexpected by most--SEAL ATTACKS:

If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be
it. The long term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by
scientists whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable
    than my own meandering
experience…I will dispense this advice now.

Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth; oh nevermind; you will not
understand the power and beauty of your youth until they have faded.
But trust me, in 20 years you’ll look back at photos of yourself and
recall in a way you can’t grasp now how much possibility lay before
you and how fabulous you really looked….You’re not as fat as you
    imagine.

Don’t worry about the future; or worry, but know that worrying is as
effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing
bubblegum. The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that
never crossed your worried mind; the kind that blindside you at 4pm
    on some idle Tuesday.

Do one thing everyday that scares you

    Sing

Don’t be reckless with other people’s hearts, don’t put up with
people who are reckless with yours.

    Floss

Don’t waste your time on jealousy; sometimes you’re ahead, sometimes
you’re behind…the race is long, and in the end, it’s only with
    yourself.

Remember the compliments you receive, forget the insults; if you
succeed in doing this, tell me how.

Keep your old love letters, throw away your old bank statements.

    Stretch

Don’t feel guilty if you don’t know what you want to do with your
life…the most interesting people I know didn’t know at 22 what they
wanted to do with their lives, some of the most interesting 40 year
    olds I know still don’t.

    Get plenty of calcium.

Be kind to your knees, you’ll miss them when they’re gone.

Maybe you’ll marry, maybe you won’t, maybe you’ll have children, maybe
you won’t, maybe you’ll divorce at 40, maybe you’ll dance the funky
chicken on your 75th wedding anniversary…what ever you do, don’t
congratulate yourself too much or berate yourself either – your
choices are half chance, so are everybody else’s. Enjoy your body,
use it every way you can…don’t be afraid of it, or what other people
think of it, it’s the greatest instrument you’ll ever
    own..

Dance…even if you have nowhere to do it but in your own living room.

Read the directions, even if you don’t follow them.

Do NOT read beauty magazines, they will only make you feel ugly.

Get to know your parents, you never know when they’ll be gone for
    good.

Be nice to your siblings; they are the best link to your past and the
people most likely to stick with you in the future.

Understand that friends come and go,but for the precious few you
should hold on. Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography and
lifestyle because the older you get, the more you need the people you
    knew when you were young.

Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard; live
in Northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft.

    Travel.

Accept certain inalienable truths, prices will rise, politicians will
philander, you too will get old, and when you do you’ll fantasize
that when you were young prices were reasonable, politicians were
noble and children respected their elders.

    Respect your elders.

Don’t expect anyone else to support you. Maybe you have a trust fund,
maybe you have a wealthy spouse; but you never know when either one
    might run out.

Don’t mess too much with your hair, or by the time you're 40, it will
    look 85.

Be careful whose advice you buy, but, be patient with those who
supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia, dispensing it is a way of
fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the
ugly parts and recycling it for more than
    it’s worth.

But trust me on the sunscreen…

BRILLIANT Spy! Love it, but makes me feel old hearing--"Class of '99""
Not really :D "You only get old when you stop playing."

    One More thing:
Develop your own interests, your own style--things that YOU like, make you grin and like to do. Don't let anyone control you through attemps of mindless chatter or put-downs--Let idle words or mockery("taking sh!t") roll off your back and move on = SELF CONFIDENCE :D In other words, be wary of living your life to constantly please or at the constant approval of others. = Freedom and Happiness :D

Try not to be quick to judge other's. I don't believe we were put on this earth or have the qualifications for that? I think we are here to help and support each other :D

Put-downs, mockery and "talking sh!t" to other's is actually a reflection of weakness and lack of confidence in the one guilty of doing it. It use to bother me, but now that I understand, I don't take it personally--I feel sorry for them. As something is generally lacking in their life as well.

As with child rearing--you learn to Pick Your Battles as wisely as can be :D

    SUNSCREEN is unanimous

As usual, I have a tendancy to get carried away writing--still working on that

Ok i didnt write that, it was a poem that was played on the radio over and over and over and over and over again when i was in london back in 99.
    Puku got the artist correct.
I just thought it was fitting and well the okes words ring soooo true to life.
but yes trust me on the sunscreen!!!
skin cancer is a bitch and it ends your surfing life real early... it takes 5 minutes to paddle in a put sunscreen on.
I know i surfed a spot over the holidays, where we also plugged close on 8 hrs in the water, granted its cape town and i was in my ninja suit, but i paddled in atleast 5 times, to take in liquid and have the odd ciggy  and also reapply my Island tribe factor 40 gel to my shnozz.
Yes we had cranking 4-6ft indo style barrels but end of the day killing my face just wasnt worth it. trust me on the sunscreen.

I agree whole heartedly with Spy,
When I still lived in Durban as a lightie one day I surfed without a rashvest or sunscreen and got so sunburnt that I had a reaction and needed to take medication so I'm now allergic to sunburn which now affects surf time etc.
To top it all off my old man has had skin cancer and its screwed up his body. There are more serious side effects than just cutting out a dodgy mole.

There is NO SUCH thing as a healthy tan!!

USE SUNSCREEN - Factor 30 plus ALWAYS!!

I was amazed that it was so difficult to find anything over factor 30 in Oz, the Country with one of the highest rates of Skin Cancer. But I did manage to find some pretty sick Beige Zinc, works super well and I don't look like a dodgy cricketer!!!
Always use Sunscreen, it's just not worth it not to!
