Yeah, without a doubt, I could imagine Peter tackling that and actually much bigger! I think the estimation of them being at least 80 foot are an exageration. I personally saw radio-forecast 80'+ surf in Northern California, up near the mouth of the Russian River. Under storm conditions and standing up, near and above the cliffs, as they were breaking over in places. They were easily 1 1/2 to 2x bigger than these babies. Actually not sure how anyone, really knows? I'm sure "Jaws" was most likely firing off humongous at the time! Still looks pretty hectic out there, though, none the less. Respect!

I don't know why I was thinking "Mavericks" and wrote "Jaws".
I was referring to and meant to write "Mavericks", in Northern California

same swell apparently at the Cortes Bank.
SA's Twiggy Baker joined the action along with mike parsons, gerlach and greggy long and tackeled the biggest cortes ridden to date.

    Pretty freaking impressive!

Do you guys ever ask yourselves, how much does this type of surfing have to do with ordinary surfing?

It's interesting that something like Surfer mag or ZigZag (yes, them) always cover the beeeg wave stuff as if it's just another form of surfing, like somebody at Hoek or Bluff on a tight barrel, but look at that pic Spy put in - seriously, it has NOTHING in common with what they do, it seems... I mean, would a river kayaker buy a paddle-ski mag, or vise versa?

Just thinking loud (so to speak). Thoughts?
  • lyle
    January 2008
dont think so loud..... joking man.

the dude is on a board standing, hes a surfer. besides, we are a bodyboarding site and we all admire the pics. they are extraordinary!! let surf mags cover it, its a form of surfing. DK is a form of bodyboarding. no one questions that.
  • peterbee

Good point. But maybe the pros would say - less magazine space for the glory boys, and more for us ordinary guys so our sponsors are happy and give more support, which progresses the sport, etc etc?

I mean, wouldn't you prefer Red Bull to sponsor a body-boarding contest at Caves? But it wouldn't support their media-optimised notion of "extreme"...

(Still just thinking, but no quite so loud this time  )
  • lyle
    January 2008
glory boys like peter lambert  have my respect!!!

good point about the riders sponsors. but ive ive seen big wave riders wearing bong suits, and that makes bong extreme, and that sells bong suits.... so ja.... i dunno.

end of the day we are all wave riders and the thing is (as someone who once had the privialge to sit in the channel shooting Dungeons) Big waves are farking impressive and big wave surfers respect one another. Gordon earned his respect from lank stand ups at dungeons and Peter has done the same. Its a different leauge all together. And the rest of us can just sit and admire at the glory of mother nature, the raw power of the ocean and the utter fear it would put into you if you were in that position.

The most impressive photo for me in that slide show above was the first one, the one with the rocks in the road... can you imagine the power if those waves were ratteling windows inland... man what a rush, now imaging riding that....

There is a big difference between 10 ft and 20ft and a world of differnce between 20ft and 80ft. Blerry Nuts i tell you.

Peter is pushing the limits, he is a pioneer in our sport and in our country.
    Big up and muchus respecto.

oh and he won a toit phone from ZAG for his shot of John at kbay. So you see the surfers like him too. hahhahaha

Yeah, they got my respect too - in a big way - no denying that! And I sure love the pics like the one Pierre posted, or Laird at Teahupoo or Chad Jackson body-boarding Cyclops - pure surf porn :P

is peter towed into waves like at sunsets??? just been browsing and am keen to know if its possible to paddle into these beasts??
  • dcmike
    January 2008
Ahoy Lyle - Dunno why the man himself hasn't replied to your question... probably scouting for his next adventure... As to towing or paddling in, check the Sunsets shots posted for Reef Biggest Wave (No towing allowed). Where he's been towed I mention it so as not to confuse the issue. Make no mistake, towing when you're lying down is NO comparison to standing with foot straps and both hands free! From what I could tell, it depends on the swell speed more than the size and the wind is a factor too.
As for Ghost Trees... well 80" is a bit of a fishing story! but we all know the Hawaians would call it solid 6 foot! haha!
  • MichelleDaniels
    January 2008
Unfortunately the big surf at Ghost Tree back on Dec. 4, 2007, did not go off without incident. One surfer lost his life:

    http://www.surfline.com/surfnews/article.cfm?id=12639

The video gives one a better perspective as to how big these beasts were! Quite huge, on second thought! I was thinking what a fiasco it would be to get caught up in the overwhelmingly, enormous, kelp beds that had broken away, incredibly and visibly floating in the huge swell, as can be seen in some of the pics Pierre posted a link to. Practically engulfing some of the waves! The first, about ¼ of the vid below is IMO wasted space, however the last gives you an idea of the emormity of that day. In ah over big waves, much more impressive in video:
    “GHOST TREE PART 2
Big Wednesday at Ghost Tree, with visitors and locals getting the biggest waves ever surfed at Monterey County's XXL wave. Tyler Smith, Alex Gray, Mark Healey, Carlos Burle and others. This clip is dedicated to area local Peter Davi, who drowned this day.”

    In regard to CORTES BANK~
Cortes Bank is located at the extreme, south of California(Mexican border) and 105 miles west, out in the ocean, accessible by boat only. Ghost Tree is located in Central California, closer to and South of San Francisco/Santa Cruz, in the Monterey Peninsula. Mavericks is close to the north, but south of San Francisco also. The same swell would not affect both locations, as in Cortes and Ghost T. Winter time, which we are in right now, is the best time to catch big swell up and down the coast of California.

Cool 18 sequential pics with audio of Cortes Bank with Gerlach, Snips, Greg Long and Twiggy—MONSTROUS WAVES:

Recent Pacific storms have resulted in some epic big wave surfing at Cortes Bank, a seamount located 105 miles west, off the California coast, from San Diego.

    Hi Lyle,

sorry I missed your question earlier. Basically if there are guys in the water you can't tow, so if its all clear we tow, and if there are guys out we paddle. The mag image is a paddle in, and most of the ones on the site, there are a few, like the sequence where I get seared that are tow. In a nutshell if its under 12" paddle is the way to go, and if its over 18" you definately don't want to be swiming arround without a boat.

Word up JMO, you still owe me an e-mail bro, but I can tell ya its been great to see Mr Clark, as far as I'm concerned you boys both charge just as hard if not harder than this old guy.

Michlelle, thanks again for the kind words, you make it all worthwhile :)

    keep charging bud!!

I had my near drowning experience at outer kom...

!st up saw Twiggy got a second in the Maverics contest... ahoy...

secondally here is the official report on that dude that drowned at Ghosttrees... seems he was a blerry Tik kop...

    January 11, 2008

Coroner: Davi was on meth at time of death at Ghost Tree
    By Clarissa Aljentera
    MediaNews

A local surfing legend who drowned in big surf Dec. 4 was intoxicated by
methamphetamine, said autopsy reports released Thursday.

Peter Davi, 45, drowned while surfing at Ghost Tree near Pebble Beach's
    Stillwater Cove.

Sheriff's Sgt. Mike Richards said toxicology results show that Davi had a
methamphetamine level of 0.75 milligrams per liter in his system at the
time of his death. The level for potential toxicity is between 0.2 to 0.5
    milligrams per liter.

"That is a lot," said Richards.

Richards said the primary cause of death was asphyxiation from
drowning, but that acute methamphetamine intoxication and blunt force
head and chest trauma were "contributing factors" in his death.

Davi had just finished surfing a big wave when friends saw him paddling
on his board. Witnesses told deputies that a few moments later they
observed that the leash from his surfboard had snapped and Davi had
    disappeared in the water.

Witnesses said waves that day were in excess of 30 feet high.

Davi was an avid fisherman who was known among surfers as a pioneer
in big-wave surfing at Mavericks, a competition held annually near Half
    Moon Bay.

Twiggy got 2nd? Wish I could have seen that! Only saw a bit of the contest and unfotunately mainly when they were waiting for another set to fire. My family wanted to take me out before surgery, so had a good time just the same

Ohhh that's very sad, indeed re: Ghost Tree!
Sadly, Meth is out of controll in this country--stolen prescription drugs as well.

    Thanks Spy, for the update!
By the way, on an amped note, can't wait to get the "SURFING SOUTH AFRICA" Book I ordered from FACTORY 7 on the weekend that you and Mike contributed to! Sounds super! Got my Sixy40 Rx(hahahah) in and ordered "Hollow Cast" as well

Meth is spreading like wildfire across the globe, here its called TIK, and whats its doing on the Cape Flats is a tragerty.
I just find it sad that an oke as old as 40 was on Meth in serious waves.
What ever happened to the good old days when surfers just smoked a bit of weed and drank too many beers?

Yeah Greg long took it and Twiggy got a second.
Grant is flying the South African Flag high again.
Checked out the Mavs website, it was pretty sick conditions.

Shame. It doesn't surprise me an "oke of 40" was on meth. In serious waves--Yes! Don't know much about the affects, only the horrendous skin conditions and open cuts/bloody sores all over as a result, not to mention the horrifically aged and immaciated condition after extended use. I would imagine, from the above tragedy, it impairs judgement as well. Use to see it's use, more with the older set, hearing of the home- based labs exploding. I guess we hear that more so, living out in the country. Know of one house under surveilance at the moment--always so sad when you see young, kid's toys in the yard, I don't know, but it has been suggested by neighbors that maybe that's an attempted decoy? Unfortunately, now meth is infiltrating the younger set as well. I know of a couple teens that were avid weed smoker's and now are experimenting with meth. VERY SAD!

The younger kids(early-late teens) are stealing other's prescription's for pain, sleep etc. I am aware of this first hand as I had a new prescription of 60 pills of Oxycodeine(powerful pain killer) stolen after being in the accident. A young man(old neighbor--hadn't seen in 12 years), 1month shy of turning 18, secretly switched it out and replaced with generic Tylenol--long story, won't go into it--
My youngest girls, first time in public school this year (10th and 12th grades), tell me the "prescription drug problem" is epic! You never hear of it publically. People appear to be giving it the "blind eye". Yet the government recently approved testing of athletes for steroids--tax payer's money affecting a small handful! --Don't get ME started--

Stoked for Greg and Twiggy. That's so cool of Grant to be flying the SA flag, showing his SA pride and support  .

OK buddy, here you go ... just for you ... LOL!!! The latest upgrade includes a FLASH BBcode which I have enabled. Hit the FLASH button and you get:
    [flash=][/flash]

What you need to do is add a width and height for the flash object and then the url location of the flash file between the tags.
    [flash=$width,$height]url[/flash]

    So this:
    [flash=600,400]http://www.surfermag.com/photos/flash/surferGallery.swf?baseURL=http://www.surfermag.com/photos/flash/wrath-winter/&xmlURL=http://www.surfermag.com/photos/flash/wrath-winter/surferGallery.xml&pathURL=http://www.surfermag.com/photos/flash/[/flash]
