Hahahah, I had to think a moment after hearing that name--"Andrew Lester" Pity the assoociation of the name.
--certainly not the great-grandson, heir of cosmetics
giant, Max Factor! The millionare, fugitive, rape suspect the Mexican Police arrested a few years back in Puerto Vallarta!
    No, it's NOT!

Bummer, especially given he is, as you say, the current Aussie Tour Champ and I would imagine has grown accustom to that lifstyle. Hopefully, for him,
if he has other sponsors, they will not follow suit. So much for living under the umbrella of support/perks, with "his greatest achievement" and as in his words : "Avoiding a proper job for the past 9 years".(9 yrs. as a pro)
Maybe he will come back into the "limelight", gaining media attension, as one of his other aspirations--"An astronaught"'
So that leaves Mitch Rawlins, Ryan Hardy, Matt Lackey, Dave Ballard and Ben Hansen. I wonder if they have another bodyboarder in mind to sponsor? Sure would be nice, since they sponsor an Australia Bodyboarding team, thata they would have more in regard to Bodyboarding, on their website--especially in "NEWS" section, on the Home page.
Cool that Bodyboarder's at least have Billabong's eye for potential sponsorship in Australia, unlike the U.S..

Ohhhhh ok, So Gordon Merchant is the big man on top of it all. I thought it was ex-South African Durbanite, Paul Naude. Maybe Paul, now residing in Laguna Beach, California, only oversee's the U.S.

How receptive to Bodyboarding sponsorship is Billabong--South Africa?

I don't think Billabong South Africa has ever sponsored a bodyboarder, event or even advertised in a bodyboarding mag.

I think they may have even tried to stop sa champs from being held at J-Bay the one year..seeing as Billabong pretty much runs the town.

They did sponsor Andre Botha a while back and they used to advertise in the old SA bodyboarding mag quite often...
Especially around the time when het was world champ...

True they did advertise in the old mag, my mistake.

But as far as I know he was sponsored by billabong international.

sa champs of 1998 was almost off.it wasnt billacrap it was more the jbu monkeys trying to stop the event from happening.
that week of sa's there was alot of oil that washed up on our beaches probably from a passing tanker .koffie jacobs(jbu honcho) wrote to the local paper complaining about the bodyboarders, who just sat on their backsides watching the surfers cleaning up the beach.
the funny thing is i dont recall seeing any surfers cleaning up the oil on that particlar stretch of beach, for the simple reason it that particular beach had minimal spillage.
the idiot was just bitter that the comp got the go ahead.

Billibong SA gave Andre Botha as well as Alistair Taylor really competitive contracts years back, they also ran many full page ads in the old "South African Bodyboarding" Magazine, but then later on decided to cut bodyboarding out of the equation all together

    Hmmm, interesting--
Thanks for your input guys--much appreciated!

So it appears from viewing billabong's business site and characterized from what some of you are saying, billabong is split up into different territories around the globe. Do you suppose that the individual territories operate somewhat independantly, with little input from each other or upstairs when it comes to sponsorship? Globally or is Is it based on each head of region's personal biases? For instance, it appears that the U.S. guy is a surfer or x-surfer. I wonder about the Australian guy?
I haven't done much work on looking further into this, however, am fascinated. Especially after talking to multitudes of people in the last year throughout my rehab process, who have had nothing to do with bodyboarding, however are now informed and pretty stoked about it. Last week when I had to miss the final and last heats of Mark McCarthy at El Confitel, due to having 2 therapy appointments. I was pretty bummed about it and told them upon arrival, of course laughingly, that I was there against my will! I excitedly told everyone all about what was going on and everyone stopped what they were doing, to listen. Some continue to ask on follow-up visits, how the bodyboarding scene is going! I guess I was visibly stoked about it as can be and they sensed it and wanted to hear more! One guy even shared that he use to bodyboard in Hawaii! Another guy said he was over the surfing scene promo's but was an interested listener when it came to bodyboarding. Whoa! Didn't anticipate that, since there are no oceans close to here--but it was exciting and opened my eyes to a possibility! You know how so many things are cyclic!? Maybe surfing is on it's way out, as it appears from talking to people. Maybe Billabong and some promoter's/sponsor's are way off base and people are ready to move on to knew horizons! Certainly is the vibe I've witnessed.

I think it's prime time to stoke the fires of bodyboarding around the world!! Seriously guys, it takes everyone of you to share the enthusiasm, everyday! Take it as a challenge to talk to total stranger about it. Most importantly, having expressly taught my 3 daughters and not trying to sound "preachy" in the least: "Always take the high road"-- it is of utmost importance to SHOW RESPECT to other riders of the waves as well. This means the Surfer's too! YOU WILL BE SO MUCH FURTHER AHEAD AND WELL RESPECTED BY OTHER'S AS WELL!
See alot of crap in the comments on YouTube. :( Shheeesh, I know how difficult it is, when someone is flicken it in your face, to keep yourself focused and not to give it right back. I myself, have become pulled into it on occasion. Am most certainly, suseptibly fragile to it at the moment, but regaining strength and composure.
I have MUCH RESPECT to all you bodyboarders and surfers, who have the luxury of a kief body of natural water, goin off with a nice swell, close at hand, to live out your dreams! Amped for you! I also have MUCH RESPECT for the skills of the talented athletes who have excelled at riding the "man-made-waves" as well. Equally as amped! Neither venue is a secured, walk-in-the-park and takes determination and practice. Several have some amazing natural skill resulting in phenominal style as well!! Face it dudes, all waves are different, but waves are waves. No need to try to compare, or use that argument in attempt to establish some form of hierarchy. It's weak and don't want to hear it. Important thing is to just have fun and share the stoke! My family, having done both, are making the best of things having a man-made wave close by and not the luxury of the ocean, anywhere close. I actually kind of chuckle to myself because, although Flowboarders take alot of crap, amazingly, as a result of our travels for Flowboarding competitions, we have met loads of the top bodyboarders in the industry and I have photographed them as well.
Including pro snowboarders and skateboarders. Hahahah, the word is out, Paul Roach, Eddie Solomon, Mike Stewart, Brandon Foster, Manny Vargas, Spencer Skipper, Jeff Bragg, AKA Lyman, Will George, Eric Apple, Jaime Lovett(Crazy Mexican-Hahah), Jimmy Hutaff, Shane DeVilla, The Bands Fall Out Boy(Natalie taught Pete and the Drummer to ride) and Red Hot Chilie Peppers, Scotty Carter, Olympic Snowboarder's Andy Finch, Shaun White and Actors Josh Duhamil and Jerry O'Connel...to name a few of whom we have met--some we see on a frequent basis--you would be surprized. Many ride, train and stay in shape, riding the "man made waves". It's great fun and especially convenient when the ocean swell is flat. If you haven't tried it or have included it as a routine, you are missing out! Natalie told me that photog Danny Black, along with several from Hawaii had a fun time riding at Wave House in California last fall. Good times! :)

After the holidays, I want to do some further research involving Billabong etc.--
I'm curious, so here is my question to all of you:

Why do you think bodyboarding is massive and still small as a sport?

Thanks sixty40 for the prompt--I want to subscribe to that mag starting with that issue--things are a little skrewed up right now, but will try to figure things out--
Looks like such a cool bodyboarding mag!
    Sorry so long winded--

Too bad you don't have a copy of sixty40 issue 1...i wrote an article about such companies...

None of the "big" surf companies support bodyboarding in SA...the only rider sponsored by one of these companies, Sacha Specker, just got dropped from their team...as they told him...

"We will not be renewing your contract for 2008 because we would like to focus more on surfing."...lol

Sorry but that cracks me up!...asif they don't already!

Its all rather sad actually...these big companies are massive, have millions and are unwilling to budge when it comes to forking out a little to support our top riders...

Its ok though...they will never recieve another cent of my hard earned money...i will only support those that support bodyboarding in South Africa.

Just wish all the groms would follow suit...

Click here to read more about those who do and don't support bodyboarding in SA.

Basically I don't think that these company's are required in anyway to support bodyboarding..we're the fools who buy their products anyway.

I mean they're surfing companies I think that it's our problem if we're dumb enough to buy the products of a company that isn't related to our sport and then expect them to give back to us.

In the future when the bodyboarding company's are more established do you think surfers will expect them to give them sponsorships?Of course not! We're a separate entity, we need to stop seeing ourselves as some kind of surfing sideshow, let's move on.

i just read all the companies that support us. does ripcurl and lizzard no longer support us? in all the old sa bodyboarding mags they advertised alot. the only brands i buy are: badboy, lizzard and ripcurl (and the odd "mr price" special). so i must know if they pulled the plug on bodyboarding...

I felt lank proud of myself yesterday.. been shopping for a day pack for mountain biking for ages now.. so i had a good idea of what i wanted... so i went to a local surf shop and looked at their range, the sales dude asks me what i want and i tune him a day pack for mountain biking, so he shows me a billabong one... naw they dont support bodyboarding sorry i dont want that one... a little confused the sales guy moves onto a Volcom day pack, again nope sorry... again they hate bodyboarder... hahhaha you sould have seen the dudes face, then we moved onto a muddy fox bag, but it was way way way way way way way over priced.. even they dont have anything to do with bodyboarding it was just too expensive.

Landed up getting a a k-way bag from cape union.
My point was made though, the sales dude was confused and i am stoked with my new bag.
