Hey guys, I'm planning to be in the UK from Dec/Jan to hook up some work and hopefully squeeze in some surf travel. If anyone has any advice or reccomendations for areas to stay/surf then help an ou out here. I would dig to meet up with some guys to go ride when i'm there.
I have no idea where I'll be based yet or anything, but maybe you guys can throw down some suggestions for me...
I have just returned after nearly 8 years on Mud Island and my advice is avoid Newquay. Yes the waves are OK but the town and the vibe there are terrible (IMHO). And gives new meaning to the word crowded.
I loved Porthleven, supposedly the best reef break in England. The locals are friendly as long as you smile and don't act like a idiot. Show a bit of respect and you will receive it in return. The main problem is that its on the south Cornish coast so gets less swell.
That being said the north coast of Cornwall gets more swell and usually its larger, you have to be willing to drive as spots tend to be in bays where one is crowded the next maybe empty.
The north Devon coast can be fun but crowded with Croyde being very popular, Bude slightly further south is generally less crowded.
If you have plenty of time and the inclanation Wales can be very rewarding, you have the Gower which is near Swansea, and Pembrokeshire which is a long drive but well worth it. Freshwater West can be brilliant. The locals were friendly here too.
You can surf in Brighton or Bournemouth but you have to be desperate, which I have been numerous times. But not really worth it if you are only there for a few months.
Post an update when you know where you will be and I will try to help.
