im not clever but all i would say is use common sense there at other breaks where people claim localism

Otherwise just claim you own the spot cause your grandad first surfed it after watching endless summer 1... haha.. ya you deal with a lot of it everywhere across the world. Just keep the locals happy, be cool, dont drop in on them, dont snake them and offer them some waves also as sign of respect if they want to feel that... and just be humble in the water and you wont have any issues....

So I should submit to a local regardless of age skill or wave riding craft??? I see quite a few people commenting on the pictures in gallery, have strong views of their localship, even though they may not be the most skilled or aged bodyboarders!! Any views on that??

My Issues arnt with locals, i respect the common law of surfing in that regard. My issue is with the 5 0000 00000 00000 cape "secret spots" that are constantly being uploaded. Then the okes threatening violence in that regard.
Back in the day ( i know the ballie in me is coming out) when you happened appon a secret spot (if it truly was secret) then you just kept quiet and shared it only with a few mates. You would surf with the same crew time in and time out.
No spot in false bay is secret (chicken and Cheese) WTF!!!!
check out this secret spot
know one knows about it
its always firing
never crowded
go tell all your mates

Maybe Kelly should take away the ability to name the spots, then everything is secret. Level the playing fields.

This is just one of those arguments that are going to haunt anyone in the ocean for the rest of eternity, spearos, fisherman and egg-beaters included...
Everyones gonna feel that pang of jealousy when some stranger paddles out where you've gotten waves since you were a grom BUT it's up to everyone to just act mature and suck it up, there's no need for attitiude for ANYONE else in the water unless they earn the attitude by being a dick.

I agree with old Mr. Marqua about those kooks who add secret spots, advertise them on the web, tell about 3000 people how easily accessed it is, how good it gets, and how uncrowded it is.. Then expects no-one to surf it cause its a secret locals only spot!! What is your logic with this?? Question is still out there, do we respect a younger less experienced rider solely because he is a "hardcore" local!!

the spot in this post is very protected by locals so watch out

July 2007
haha yea it quite a touchy subject. The only thing I hate is when people refer to themselves as locals, because they surf a nearby spot frequently. That is utter bullcrap, I never refered to myself as a caves local even though I surf there almost everyday, I waited until someone of the older crew refered to me as a local. This was only after about 2 years and after getting to know everyone and all those minor details. This would then mean that it is actually not possible to have a local who has no skills, because the only way the locals (ballies

) would start to notice you is if you bodyboard there frequently, show some skills and if you aren't a arrogant twirp. We always have a kiff vibe in the water as no one thinks hes the king and there is a mutual understanding between us. Even though caves is like one of the most nonsecret spots around we all strive to keep it uncrowded, by not naming the spot when we upload the pictures, or going bananas with comments on the pics like "OH MY SOUL THIS IS THE BEST WAVE IN THE WORLD, I WANT TO MAKE LOVE TO IT EVERY MOMENT OF EVERYDAY" etc etc. It just seems that some people really dont put alot of thought into it when they type a comment or upload a picture. Open photoshop and flip the pic, try a differant angle so it isnt that obvious, use your brain. And then when your this "Local" person, you still have no right snaking and inside paddling, I scheme being local means your the person who waits your turn, chat with new faces in the water and try to improve the vibe in water. Ofcourse if someone is acting like a real idiot you send him out. For some reason people beleive that because they are local they must have the best waves, total shit. A good example of a super kiff local is josh kleve. I surfed hoek (kinda sure hes "local" there) once with him and the dude is super chilled and kiff person (who rips it) in the water. That is what I beleive a local should be. Not someone who gets the best waves because he is a agro-snaking badass local, but someone who gets the best waves by using his local knowledge and having fun in the water. Ok im tired

asumo 3000 dude... nail on the friggin head.
A true local will actually advise a howlee on what waves to catch, what not to catch, who the doos in the water is, which stand ups are cool, which stand ups you can burn (jokes)
A true local is generally the guy more content to sit and wait for the better waves and not hog every ripple that rolls through.
Show respect to gain respect, its as easy as that.
Personally i vote for the Plett Crew as the best local crew i have ever encountered on my travels, oh and the 5 okes who make up the still bay crew. Wicked those okes know how it is. Peace, good times plenty waves and happy dayz.

Who cares......I'm a local at every spot I paddle out at.....wwwaaaahhaa ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
All you ou's are bitching over nothing man, you haven't seen crowds till you've surfed at Strand (like I did on Sunday morning, holy cow it was carnage and packed full of "grumpy locals").....If your secret spot turns into Big Bay on the weekend then you can complain. If you have lived in Durban and tried to surf North Beach on a good day, then you know what a crowd is. But if there is like 10 ou's at "your" reef break, big deal, just go to spot "B" and if there is 1 ou out there then go to spot "C". The Cape is packed with unridden gems and I'm sure you all know of plenty. I remember going to "Cow's Corner" when no-one but a few knew about it, now every man, his dog and Photog heads straight for Stroom, you don't hear anyone complaining about that. Or lets hear from the cats that surfed 3erde Steen first.......

Spy dude wrote Nathen(correct spelling is like this N-A-T-H-A-N).. to answer your question: Yes you do respect a grom local.
In the real world, at a business meeting or such, a twelve year old told you how to run your company because the company was situated in his town, how would you respond?? I don't fully understand you Marqua!! You get some arrogant 8year old with no riding ability, yet has right of way to every wave just because he lives in the vicinity?? I disagree!![/quote]

Braden WobbeJuly 2007So strange that this topic comes up after I been talkin to a few people about this lately.
The way I grew up. was U paddle out and watch the locals get waves and maybe befriend one or two. as u get older and more experienced and less of a wet ass. You get more waves. I was a cocky kid and i got roughed up quite a few times. Actuallly quite often. I learnt the hard way. Those spots where i grew up and the guys who used to beat me up have all become stand ups or dont surf anymore cos they got married and fat. Or whatever, the point is, i went through years of what i went through to even be allowed at the take off of some spots . YEARS.
But to put it simply, Its ur house. All your brothers and sisters share your house. and you guys share it with whoever comes with peace and who came humbly. If it so happens thats such blow ins are rude and aggressive towards your brothers and sisters, the famiyl sticks together and sorts it out however it can be sorted out. That family that sticks together even though they dont seem to know eachother....those are locals. And before the locals were other locals and so on and so forth.
The locals are the ones who are the guardians of the spot. they rescue drowning kids there. they got there first barrel there etc etc.
If u paddle out at your local spot and theres 5 guys in the water and by the time u get to the take off ....the five guys are gone. And u are alone. then u know ur family got a reputation for upholding the peace in your hood.
Which brings me to the reason I started typing here in the first place.
I wanna just give a little ahoy to all those guys who been welcomed by the wkk. they are a great buch of guys, i have not met a collective heart like is with them. They didnt have to tell you where there spots are, you were invited. So dont take the piss, dont think that because they are nice guys you can over run a beautiful spot that is slowly getting ruined by some poor attitude apparently. Unfortunatley when it comes to blow ins giving my brothers a hard time in their back yard. I will step up and will bring the rest of my family cos thats how i roll. I got my brothers and sistas backs just like they got mine. Whether i stand with 300 or i stand alone i will fight for my family. And i will fight for what i believe is right.
Dont matter who you are or think you are. you better walk carefully when u not at home. Same as they do when they walk in your back yard. they walk carefully.
Its up to you, do you wana be part of the family and friends and fun, which is why we do what we do, its cos we love it, or do you wanna go home bleeding?
Its all about riding waves and having a good time. If u piss on that then u deserve what u got comin. But u all gotta remember something, it is one big pond and its not yours it is ours, it is our ocean and earth to share.
ITs about being humble and having respect no matter who u think u are. look at the big picture, we are very small.
peace and love

that is a very interesting post.
respect for your attitude - it's a little action hero at times but you say some very positive things.
what i want to know is whether this post of yours is alluding to things that have happened already or what?
i'm confused. shit, i haven't even found the spot and i am not even looking for it any more. i have nothing to say actually.

oh my gosh where is that spot of that image and the coastline?!! i want to go there and take pics and heard about it somewhere back in the day and been searching for it since my grandad heard rumor about it... hmmm im onto it now!! mind you isnt that GoldCoast Superbanks?! hahahaa...
Ja if the locals cheese you off then just wait for them in the bush, stab them in the chest 3 times and tie a rock onto there leg and drop them off the backline... PRESTO > NO LOCAL!!! thats plan Z id say...
local shmocal.. cause you can be a local and go travelling and come back a few years alater ad you going to have all these new groms claiming it..the end of the day who cares?! it a wave and if you ride well and score it well done stoked for you and so should everyone else and there should be no issues if you dont snake and hussle in the water

ja what happened to the days of whatever breaks you were at giving the old school riders the priority when they ripped even when you were on the inside? when i was a grom and had Cockwells, Thiel, Seppings, Harvey that bunch you didnt even think about paddling for a good wave if they were right next to you and you were on the inside unless they called you into it...
long gone are the good old days...or you can get a water housing and get every barrel that comes through on the other hand

ChilternburtJuly 2007Im with mark, i too grew up riding NB and was always looking over my should at the older guys like Billy, Doug, Gordon, Watkins and crew and also the younger guys who ripped, Peerman, Dre, Barnard and Benson, it was more about respect...

thats how it was when i was a grom.
I remeber when i got back from my stint in the UK a few years ago, paddled out at Kbay and had some little snot nose child tuning me not to hassel cos i wasnt a local and i should rather go ply my tactics at the burg. wow. hectic.
Lighties of today have no respect... i blame play station and MTV.

Braden WobbeJuly 2007Bru! When i got back from australia i paddled out at rocklands in sea point and some lil blonde kid asked me why i was there and where i live. and told me i must rather get out. hahahaha i was laughing my head off! I told him the story and he got it though. but damn that was good!

bru we are all laughing here.
Wish i could afford a water rig though, seriously its like my greatest dream, well second greatest dream, the birth of my child in jan next year will be the furfulment of my greatest dream.
the attitude was different in surfing a few years ago and in 10 yrs from now it will be different from where it is now. Shit happens, things change, people move.
But i can tell you it is nice to paddle out somewhere after not surfing it for a year and all the homeboys in the water greet you like a long lost brother and give you the wave of the day as a welcome home present.
