    Hello noo-noos.

Heres a letter I wrote to Blunt Mag. Lets see if they print it.

    "Haazit.

In 1960 odd Bruce Brown made The Endless Summer – the original surf movie. I love that flik. I watch it all the time. That and Riding Giants. My favorite scene in Endless Summer is in the first half hour when Mr. Brown is introducing surfers and surfing from around the world. One scene shows Bodyboarders surfing California wedge – in 19 voetsak – and he refers to them as surfers! Open the latest Zig Zag and there’s a shot of a surfer pulling in at Pipe, but look at the line-up in the background and you’ll see there are about 14 Boogers waiting their turn. You see, the boys are out there charging but are hated and labeled. Stand up and be counted they say. Zig Zag actually had a question they would regularly pose to featured surfers (until they realized the connotations that is), “Would you ever succumb to Bodyboarding?” like crack cocaine or the dark side of the force.

I’ve risked my neck often surfing suicidal shore breaks at Gassies up the West Coast, massive barrels a surfer just cant get into (believe me – I’ve seen them try) . My boet Jeandre broke his collar bone there in November and was back charging even bigger swell in December. But the boys get zero respect and even less coverage. Do yourselves a favour and watch the latest No Friends DVD. The Waiimea shore break section is absolutely mental. These guys are fearless and that shit is impossible (to quote Riding Giants).

We are basically an underground movement, a small community where the pros are worshiped by us and ignored by everyone else. We may not be mainstream but there are 100’s of us in SA. A market most refuse to tap into just because we’re not cool - like Shane Dorian - In Gods Hands.

So, thanks guys. Finally a profile on a Booger. I might even subscribe if you keep that up.

    Cheers

Blunt mag is part of atol media and thus a sister mag to zigzig, who by the way hate you more than concentration camp jews hate the nazis. Atol media is evil and zigzag is the work of the devil.

this will probably get me shot down in flames but hey talking of Shane Dorian I was in the water with him out in Morocco a while back now and I saw him get the most amazing barrell I have ever seen while out at Boats, he hassled me in the water as much as he hassled standups, still quality wave and a quality surfer.

Actually the first thing I noticed about that pic of Pipe in the Zag was how many spongers there were out there, obviously surfers will point out the fact that they dont charge but merely shoulder hop but we know that already. Keep bodyboarding underground, I would hate for the sport to end up like the corporate circus that is surfing.

I had a dream last night that a booger made the cover of Zig Zag. I must really stop drinking so much beer before bed.

There's a stand up dvd out where at the end Shane Dorian surfs Chopes (i think it was chopes) on a Bodyboard.

In Gods Hands really was lame but if the man is prepared to lay down and be counted, he might redeem himself a bit with me anyway.

fuck dude thats pretty lucky. Ask them if you can get a homeblown blank used. Biodegradeable and available in SA apparently. Will be one of the first to have one and then when (presumably) selling it on, yuppies will pay for the privelage.

I still rate it's some kind of ironic joke, they probably know who Peter is...just like Zag to have a little subliminal dig at boogers.

Craig Mckune ( the editor ) spoke about bodyboarding at Diaz coz it was to big for a surf board. All straight forward stuff- didnt even choon me grief.

What got my attention was the editorial comment when he talks about being younger cruising the coast with just a bodyboard and a creme soda super m.

We may have an ally here boys.

haha, all this hype is funny. I see it as even though we both work off waves Bodyboarding and Surfing is two totally different sports!! If you stop comparing it and push all the conflict aside most of us are really nice people that get along... in fact if i ever go for a standup session i normally make more friends and end up having a laugh and chat with new surfers in the water.. now how often can you say that about bodyboarding?

But also scored some fun waves today with this big swell with JMO and even though we were the only two bodyboarders we had a cool chat to some of the standups and they were pretty stoked on how JMO was charging deep of the boil. Most of us bodyboard when we are young and then stand up after our backs give in or give up on the fight of trying to find sick waves to bodyboard everyday... i can pull out a surfboard and go down in 2-3 slop and still have a really good surf on just about most breaks.. on a bodyboard, sha right! Its to small, frustration kicks in and you start hating your sesh or give up...but not saying thats all the time.

Me im not chosing sides and take an option of the latter.. i bodyboard and surf... and actually get a lot of respect from the surfers cause they know i bodyboard but when they see how well i can surf also they are pretty stoked and respect that i can do both fairly well and dont see any need for judging each other etc... oh well thats my open views and its like religion. We can all debate about it and there will be no final answer or outcome...

I say lifes to short to worry about it and just enjoy whatever you do. If someone wants to get freaked out about the sport, well good luck to him cause im enjoying my life and time in the water and not going to let his problem make me lose any sleep...

I was chatting to him (Craig) on Blunt's Forum on their website, I asked him why it is that they dont feature any bodyboarding in the mag, and to my supprise he didnt write me off at all. First he told me that they do run some bodyboarding features in the mag, even thogh it was very little. (apparently there was a half page profile of Rob Gray in 11.4.)

Further more he explained to me that "bodyboarding has an unfortunate history of being at the losing end of propaganda and bullshit." I'm guessing the primary reason that they don't run bodyboarding features is because the big advertisers such as volcom will pull out.... :?:

All in all he actually sounds like a really decent oak, nothing like those 'every-day arrogant surfers' you'd expect someone in his possition to be like..

yeah very well put and so true it is. My crew is made up of mostly close friends that sponge. But when my bro is home I normally surf with him and a mate. So then our crew is made up of me, a sponger, my bro who's an egg beater and his mate who's a stick man. and they also do the preaching thing and try convert me.

Anyway the point I'm trying to make is that I've had some awesome sessions wit em, I've had sum awesome sessions in the bboarding crew and basically I really don't care what u ride. I respect people in general and disrespect others only coz of their personality or what they've done to me. Say try convert me

I'd rather worry about making a section and busting than preaching to others. How much better we are eh!!?

Cool. A whole forum just for us. Like I said on bluntmag.co.za, propaganda and bullshit! You know it. Beyond that, certain cats' got my tongue. Yup, I grew up a booger in the Cape. Now I'm a bad stand-up surfer.

Oh, and to the guy who reckons we take skaters for a pooooees, what do you mean? That's not a defensive question. I skate worse than I surf, but I'm a big fan of 'real' skaters. By no means do I want to take them for fools! C
