Cape2Rio Ep. 2

4th May 2010

It's 4pm in Rio de Janerio and I'm writing to you through closed eyelids, as I'm completely exhausted from surfing - GOOD WAVES! Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine Brazil to have waves of this quality, from wedging beachbreaks to shallow, sucky reefbreaks, Brazil really has something for everyone.

When we arrived at the beach on our first day we were amazed by the clean, well groomed 3 footers hitting the shallow banks and wedging before barreling down the beach. We were also amazed by the fact that there were not one million hungry Brazillians dotting the lineup, and with promises of a Shark Island style Reef just around the corner things were looking up!

On Friday morning, after a killer breakfast of fruit and Acai we headed out to the infamous 'shorebreak' (weird name for a reef yes). At first glance I thought that it really did look like the island, but once out there and into the first few waves, Damian King, Lilly Pollard and myself all agreed Cyclops would be a more appropriate comparison. The waves were only small, about 3ft, but for what they lacked in size they made up for in lack of water on the reef. You literally had to point your board straight to make it out the barrel.

We usually spend our afternoons eating and talking story before heading out to dinner. The food here is next level and on Saturday night, we hit up a Japanese restaurant for an all you can eat sushi buffet. What an epic evening, having a few beers over some sushi with our new friends Leo and Theresa soon led to an almost bare plate, barring a large piece of wasabi. Kingy and I offered up 100 dollars to the person who would eat and swallow this heinous treat. Leo did it, and to say the least, I thought I might have a lawsuit on our hands. After refusing him water 10 seconds in, we started to hear him actually gasp for air, the dude was choking on a piece that had gotten stuck in his throat, by this time he was on his feet spewing up and so were the rest of the patrons! HAHA, thanks for the laugh Leo and enjoy the 100 bucks!

Sunday morning and we were taken to quite possibly one of the best beachbreaks I have ever surfed, Sao Conrado south of Rio. You might not be able to deduce from the pictures as they were taken on the smallest day, but take it from me. It is that good. We surf there every morning, before heading home for our afternoon sleep.

Yesterday (Sunday evening) we decided we just had to go in the cable car to Pao du Acucar (Sugar Loaf mountain). This was definitly the best 20 dollars I have ever spent and having a beer during sunset on top of one of the wonders of the world was something I will never forget.

It's Monday evening now, we got good waves this morning and will most likely be releasing a Turbo Podcast of our Sessions over the next few days, so look out for that.

Tommorow we are heading to the competition site at Buzios to check in so I will do another post tommorow about that and also with some cool information on my boards that I really want to share with you!

For now, enjoy the Photos and Videos!
