Billy Takes Round One of the Sixty40 Flow Series

posted on 1st May 2009

The Sixty40 Flow Pro in Association with Wavehouse, Hot buttered bodyboards, Surf HQ & Gotcha Clothing kicked off the first stop of the series at the Wavehouse on Monday, April 13th. The event started with an autograph session with HB International Team rider & IBA world tour campaigner Wesley Fischer & the Current IBA World #5, Mark McCarthy. The kids were flocking in for their chance to meet the pro's and get their copies of Sixty40 signed.

The event finally got under way after the autograph session and the action kicked into top gear. The warm-ups began and the riders were going nuts! Stephen Janssens was throwing huge backflips and ARS's. He looked like a UFO coming out of the barrel and launching massive airs. Wez Fischer dominated on the knee and prone positions respectively and Mark McCarthy was even getting barreled and boosting his famous trademark inverts.

The contest ran very smoothly and guys were charging throughout the competition but when it came to the finals it was crunch time! The business end of the comp had finally arrived.

The Amateur Final was the first to hit the water and with Charles Pass, Miguel Cardoso, Mark McCarthy & Adam Waites contesting it this was going to be a memorable one. Mark started off well, pretending he was at Shark Island and boosting his famous inverts high above the lip and landing some solid runs. Adam Waites was riding considerably well but just didn't have enough to keep up with Miguel and Charles. Charles and Migz were busting out and trading positions. Charles was throwing some solid inverts and rolls and Miguel throwing huge rolls, spins and landing his first ARS ever on the D-Rex. Miguel just didn't have enough to take the win and Charles Pass got his maiden victory at the Wavehouse.
The Boys Final was next to hit the water and was a hard fought battle between Trevor Karsten & Boys SA Champ Robbie Waites. It was good to see these groms busting out, throwing some good rolls in the critical section and with just a point separating the two riders, Trevor came out on top with Robbie in close 2nd.

The Pro Final hit the water next as most of the finalists were hitting a double heat final so we made the decision to run Pro before DK.
The Pro Final saw the top dogs going big with the likes of Stephen Janssens, IBA World tour campaigner and former 2007 SABA champion Wesley Fischer, 2007 US Flowtour Champion & former World #2, Billy Tennant and long time charger on the D-Rex, Cameron Nelson.
The Final kicked off with a bang with Stephen Janssens throwing some solid runs down, setting the early pace. Wes was doing his normal routine with a clean, solid performance and the style master was doing it to the "T". Billy came out firing as usual and set the stage for going big and showing why he was a former world #2 on the Flowboarding scene. Cameron Nelson got an automatic 4th as he got injured in his semi-final and had to sit out of the final.

Stephen "The Dark Horse" Janssens got settled in and turned it up for the final, he was throwing huge trick after huge trick. He threw some of the biggest backflips & ARS's I have ever seen on the D-Rex but was just not able to land them. It was a closely contested final but in the end Billy, with his smooth riding, huge and fluidly linked tricks gave him the edge and he pocketed the R1000 prize purse.

The DK Final was spectacular to watch, especially with style master Wesley Fischer. Wes was up against Billy Tennant, Paul Munro and Stephen Janssens. Stephen pulled out at the last minute due to an injured foot which he incurred in the Pro Final throwing down those huge ARS's. 3-man final was set for the DK division. Paul Munro started out good with good, smooth linking tricks and his clean style was earning him the points. Billy came out with big snaps, spins, solid carves showing some impressive spray and barrel rides but when Wez came out it was pretty much game over! Wes with his smooth style, huge DK Airs, spin variations and solid carves, he set the bar and it was too much for anyone to come near and he had combo'd the other riders with a score of 19 out of a possible 20, with a perfect 10 point ride, he had the win in the bag.
