If i was you i would go Rossi or ATD, something supporting SA bodyboarding, i have an ATD rail2rail and i realy dig it.... If u keen for ATD u need to order soon before Al leaves for hawaii....

I also can recomend Science boards, like the new Mark Mcarthey model, and science is supporting the SA bodyboarding industry aswell...

    Support those who support you

The best advice i have is for you to get hold of Derek Footit at Factory7

If you don't already know, Factory7, is the original South African online surf store. Owned and run by bodyboarders for bodyboarders - including other watersports of course.

F7 support the SA bodyboarding community in a BIG way and stock all of the above mentioned boards. Another BIG plus is that they run the sweetest specials in town. Orders over R200 come with free delivery so the price you see is the price you pay!

I have ordered from F7 plenty of times and have yet to encounter a problem with their service.

Another great piece of customer service they offer is the toll free hotline - 0800 FSEVEN (0800 373836)
You can give Derek a buzz and pretty much ask him anything about bodyboards and he will sort you out one time ek se.

I have personally ridden elemenophee, Science, ATD and Nomad bodyboards.
Currently i ride a Science Mark McCarthy & Science Thomas Robinson. My favourite being the McCarthy.

However my best board has to have been my ATD custom...probably because it was shaped for me and suited my needs perfectly.

Stay tuned for some exciting new Nomad boards hitting the F7 shelves this Summer...I have seen them and want one already!

And i personally wouldn't support BZ based on the fact that the guy who brings them into the country doesn't put a single cent back into the industry.

Click HERE to link to the F7 website.

The problem with calling retailers or dealers for information is that they will usually punt their own brands and stock, and of course they should do that.
If I am not mistaken, it looks like there is going to be a board review in the next Sixty40 mag due out in a weeks time. I haven't read it obviously, but hopefully it will be an unbiased review with solid technical information and comparisons to help guys choose the right board.

Yo shot for the info.. but hehe like i said :) SA guys dont seem to like or maybe not use the NMD boards cause no one mentions it :D on all the international forums they recommend the NMD Ben Player PP Concave Bodyboard, but what you guys think of the MS1 LTD 2009 looks damm sexy :)

    Does CNA stock sixty40 magz?

I think ive narrowed my choices down to the NMD ben player or a MS1 LTD, ive checked out ATD and Rossi not really feeling that special connection :P and not lots of recommendations.

    Yes all good advice here.
F7 should be able to sort u out in every way possible.
The board u go for will ultimately need to conform to ur individual style & preference bro.
Like if u know exactly what u want and cant find it on any stock boards in the shops then go for a fully customizable local shaped one.
Different stokes for different folks hey is wat they say & it couldnt be more true as in the case of bodyboedring.

Both boards u mentioned are cookers in their own rights.
Just depends if u like a bat ( delta ) or a crescent.

Personally I would go the MS1 way, just cos it looks the shizzle for prone riding

    Good luck bro.

hmm well im still reviewing the specs of the boards but i am a little stumped at something, the Stringer + Polypro combo is said to be to stiff for Cape Town?? is that true? or can cape town water generally handle this combination in a board?

*edit* maybe i should of asked first off, for cape town water what is best specs recommend i.e dbl string, single stringer, polypro or polyethylene etc etc
  • craigtrilivascraigtrilivas

Polypro is fine as is polypro wit a stringer which is wat most guys ride these days.
PE is better cold waters in my opinion but it is a lil heavier so ja....
Im dying to try out ATD's new core tho I wont lie.

But u should be fine wit a polypro with/without stringer dood

The rule of thumb is that Cape waters are best suited to PE(Polyethylene) core with a single stringer because the board stiffens up in the cold. Most boards these days come with a stringer irrespective of the core type.

ATD boards used to be made stringerless when he used the X-Cell cores. They are light and stiff cores and don't really need a stringer.

Now when it comes to PP(Polypro) cores - they are the only core i choose to use. They are, in my opinion, lighter than PE cores, they offer better speed, better projection when busting and losen up after they have been used for a couple of weeks. They however are not as durable as PE cores - from what i understand. So your PP board probably won't last you 5 years if used regularly.

    2 stringers or 1...

One works fine for me and i can't really comment on 2 because i have never ridden a board with 2.

For more info on cores try giving this article a read - CLICK HERE!

bru, ive had 2 boards from rossi. my 1st one lasted me 5 years. i didnt surf that much when i was at school. pp core with stringer, open cell deck, slick bottom. it eventually creased and bent in two.

my current custom rossi is 3 years old. pp core, 2 stringers, closed cell deck and hard bottom. i surf fri, sat, some sundays and mondays. all surfs are min 1 hour and on sat and sun min 2hours. plus ive been on numurous surf trips surfing 6 hours a day. and it looks brand new!! no creases nothing. it is very stiff- but i enjoy that. so i support rossi!!!! 8)

i do look after my boards. dont drag em on the sand or sit on em. wash em off after surfs and never leave it in the sun and it has a padded board bag. money dont come easy!

    happy choosing!

    Howzit buddy.

I would def check out the special ATD is currently running, its something nuts like 750 a board..
If your worried about longevity, get two for the price of one bru???

Alastair is core,he knows exactly what works and what doesnt and can even chape you a board that will go well in the kinds of waves you surf.
For instance, one of my previous boards, was shaped with one surfspot in mind. The wave in question is very hollow and quite fast, the board was downsized to a 41 to allow me more control over it,the flex was uber to accomadte the scooping drops and steppy conditions AND the cherry on top was that the recoil of the flexing motion of the board was super responsive and speedy to get me the hell outta there!Lol...Needless to say i was not singing the boards praises in two foot slop..

Basically what im trying to say is send al a mail, chat too him,he has time for everyone and will gladly answer even your most technical questions with factual answers.

As for the stringer saga,I just dont think I could use a board with a stringer? No response for me.Il just stick with my aquafin like flex haha

Hit al up,you will not be sorry bud.Ek sweer:D

Ahh ok sick.. so i take it the MS1 LTD is a very stiff board? But doesnt the Polypro allow it to bend?

I won an NMD Player on here but I had a few bat-tailed boards I was riding so the guys at NMD let me swop for a Winny with a crescent tail which I am loving, faster than a speeding bullet, stable and responsive down the line and no creases after a few heaving shorey barrels down the South Coast so I could definitely recommend NMD.

I've had absolutely no issues with mine and still looks pretty new considering how hard I am on them (No not, tearing 15 foot monsters, think stretchy-tie downs to my bike, long rides in the wind, sun and rain, bottom of the stack in the crowded car boot etc etc.)

Yea ive been eying the NMD whinny out it has everything i want in a board although i have never ridden bat or delta before so that why im probably going to go with MS1 LTD or BZ Hubb Fundamental.

And im not really a drop knee kinda guy so yea :)

  • November 2008
you'd be surprised with the delta tails how good they are! I came from BZ and then almost went to CustomX but the boards that had the delta tails didnt do the half inch sizes, so was either 41 or 42...so no use for me as 41.5....im sure if you give someone a shout with a NMD around the area they will be stoked for you to take on a wave or two!! are you in CT at all? if so give me a shout and ill let you take my board for a spin :)

the end of the day there are loads of boards to ride and choose from, they are all different shapes / sizes and models and got there pros and cons. It might take you a few different brands before you get the right one. I know there are loads of boards i cant ride cause i just dont like the materials / cuts.

    good luck!
