Howling on shores, torrential down pours and one super over loaded car is not quite how you would like to start your road trip, but hey, life’s not perfect. Leaving Cronulla behind us, we headed north to the land of hopes and dreams, or so we thought.

With a good swell running and barely out of Sydney we stopped at the first wave we could find…Dee Why. It was rather disappointing but definitely not unexpected… the surf sucked ! Like I said there was a howling on shore and I’m not talking just your average on shore conditions. Trees, houses and all sorts of other shit had conveniently been bulldozed over by the wind in the past two days. However it didn’t dampen our hopes in the least, there was still a lot of miles, beaches and reefs between us and Brisbane and we still had three weeks to go.

We ended up staying in Avalon for a few days just cruising around hunting, wishing and waiting for surf. It never came, or so we thought. Turns out those old people are right when they say, “ Never judge a book by its cover!”. Our last day in the area and whale beach (the wedge) was about 3 foot on the sets with a light off shore… sounds good I know, but it looked like shit! That didn’t stop Attie and Kavi from taking a paddle and three hours later not only did we found out how sick they got it ,but they also happened to be surfing it along side the Player brothers. So a word of advise from the wise… listen to what the old people tell you, they ‘re right!!!!!

Not much happened over the next few days, the swell had dropped off and we found ourselves pretty lost. We did manage to hook a quick surf up in Newcastle, before things started going wrong. First our car boot lock goes and brakes and then after a serious wrong turn we end up 150km off course when the power steering switch blows, pissing transmission fluid all over the boiling hot engine! So one tow truck, one new part, $120 and twenty four hours later we were back on the road!

We made a few stops along the way over the next few days, but once in Coffs Habour we decided to hang round for a day or two. The decision turned out for the best as the following day we were lucky enough to score some waves. Only about 2-3 foot but some of best conditions ever, this left comes of the point and runs into the on coming right providing a rather fun launch pad. Keep riding and it goes all the way to the fun shore break with yet another fun launch pad. The good conditions only lasted for a short period, but the waves kept coming. Leaving Coffs there was one more thing we had to do… The Big Banana !!!! You just got get a picture man!

From Coffs it was on to Iluka and although we never got to surf it (no swell), let me just say that this has got to be the second best wedge in the world. California’s wedge being number one of course! If you ever find yourself in the area do yourself a favour and check it out, the potential is mind blowing!

At the moment we are up in Byron bay, the surf sucks and so too does the wind. But its all good, our friends arrive tonight and better yet the swell hits on Tuesday…. Right about the same time we are gonna be sitting next too Snappers, Kirra and D-Bar! Sick!

Until the next post good night, God bless and thank you from the crew down under.
