If not held it would be a huge disapointment to bodyboarders all over the globe and in particular it will be a betrayal to all the great Hawaiian bodyboarders past and present. |

4403 | 23 Nov 2004 | Chris Constantino | Point Pleasant, New Jersey | United States | Again we are in the battle to fight for our being. Pipe is the most renowned wave in the world and has provided a venue and an environment for the bodyboarding world. Pipe's predictability yet unpredictability has provided pro and amateur bodyboarders and surfers alike a place to show what it takes to charge big waves. It's massiveness, beauty and power provides the perfect arena for us to show what it takes to charge....
The Hawaiian government should be the first to understand the history and culture of bodyboarding and this event and should be the first to step up to the plate, being Hawaii is a place so rich in history and culture, and stand up for our sport and give all the sports an equal opportunity to display their talents.
Bodyboarding and surfing bring a recognizable portion of money to Hawaii especially Oahu and they should all get there fair share.
Permitting is nothing but a bureaucratic way to get get more money and obviously there is a bias towards the stand-up fellows due to the large population and revenue they bring in....it is unfair that there is an unlevel playing field here but this is the United States and cash rules everything around me.
I don't know if the contest revenues pay for lifeguards and security and infrastructure support as well as the purses but that is why we have sponsors and contest fees; to offset these things in hopes that a memorable event will bring many back for years and that this revenue speaks volumes for years to come.
I wholeheartedly support this cause and hope that the Hawaiian government reconsiders their stand against granting a permit. There are 90 to 120 days of potential large surf in the Hawaiian winter and I DON'T feel that granting 4 to 8 additional days is all that much of a burden to the government. If the contest is held on certain days, sent those cops home early rather than paying them for a full day, redistribute the extra guards to other beaches do something to make this feasible....please!
Thanks,
Lumpy |
