WBBC Fund Raiser Contest

posted by Ian Kruger on 2nd December 2011

The Warner Beach Bodyboarding Club recently organised a pre dawn trip down the coast to hunt for waves only to be met by tragedy as a drunk driver collided with the lead vehicle.
Vice chairman Trevor Pieterse picks up the story from here and gives details of what happened and the fund raising competition to be held at North Beach.

'We were on a pre planned trip down the south coast to Port Edward, planning to stop at random spots on the way and surf for footage, we all met up at the Warner Beach angling club (also our clubhouse) at 3am to get ourselves sorted and planned, and all our things packed. We left at about 03:15 and +- 200m down the road a bakkie out of nowhere came flying towards us and hit the first vehicle (There were 2 car's travelling in convoy.) As we came to a stop and got out to see what had happened we saw the horrific site of our friends bakkie lying on its roof with smoke still coming out and the backwheel still spinnnig slowly. First thing we did was run up to the bakkie to see if the guys were alive and heard them moaning and crying for help to get them out. We phoned the paramedics and fire brigade with tow trucks first on the scene. The paramedics right on there heels within 10 minutes of the first phone call. I then ran to the other vehicle to see if the guys were ok in the other vehicle and both were alive but the driver looked in a terrible state. After about 15 minutes the paramedics declared the driver of the other vehicle dead on the scene. The passenger of that vehicle resulted in a broken leg and arm. Our guys are all in hospital and healing up nicely.'

The guys from our club who sustained injury are as follows:

Simon Williamson (chairman) Broken ribs, pelvis and ankle
Chris Clarke (camera man) Popped shoulder and fractured, popped pelvis and a piece broken off and a damaged knee cap.
Charles Williamson (bodyboarder and member) Minor head injuries and cuts and bruises
Chad Knowles (bodyboarder and member) broken leg and arm in 3 places

the other vehicle had 5 guys no injuries:

Jaryd van Daalen (member and bodyboarder)
Trevor Pietertse (Vice chairman)
Jay-D van Daalen (Member and bodyboarder)
Kyle Stirling (member and bodyboarder)
Dylan Taljaard (member and bodyboarder)

All the guys are on the road to recovery and will hopefully be back in the water in the next 4 to 6 months.
