Bodyboarders have chosen Margate, one of only eight marked ‘blue flag beaches’ in the country, as the venue for the Wimpy/ Rossi Pro-Am which takes place from 3 to 4 April on the Kwa-Zulu Natal south coast. Margate main beach has earned the reputation of being a pristine spot that attracts hordes of international tourists annually. Margate also boasts some of the most consistent surf making it an obvious choice for the bodyboarders to stage their 4A rated South African Bodyboarding Association (SABA) sanctioned tournament.

“Margate has the most consistently good waves all year round which almost guarantees decent surf for the event, add the holiday town atmosphere and nightlife and you have one of the best all round contests on the tour,” commented Wayne Beekman, Event Organiser and Chairman of the Southern Kwa-Zulu Natal Bodyboarding Association.

The Blue Flag works towards sustainable development at beaches through strict criteria for the exclusive eco-label dealing with water quality, environmental education and information, environmental management, safety and other services.

The bodyboarding event coincides with the Easter holidays and plenty of school goers from around South Africa are expected to converge on the south coast to bodyboard or simply enjoy being spectators at the fiercely contested Wimpy Rossi Pro-Am.

The highest rated bodyboarding tournament includes R10 000 in prize money for the Pro riders with product prizes valued at over R25 000 up for grabs for other divisions that include boys, juniors, men, women, masters, drop knee, under 12 boys, under 16 girls and a development section.

The Wimpy Rossi Pro-Am is the third event on the hotly contested 2004 SABA circuit. The tournament which is in its eighth year is hosted by the Southern KZN Bodyboarding Association.
