The 2010 Sport Unlimited Western Province Champs

posted by Damon Crawford on 9th September 2010

The Sport Unlimited WP Champs 2010 got off to a typical winter’s day start in what would prove to be contestable conditions. There were some cracking heats that took place in amongst the many rain showers that tested the wits of both spectators and competitors alike. Thrashing sheets of rain with the odd burst of sunshine made sure everyone kept eyes on the surf and the sky. But in typical Province FTB style the crew and team of judges and organisers managed to pull off a fantastic event. And this was all thanks to the unwavering support from long time sponsors, Sport Unlimited.

The day was to be culminated with a prize giving that took place at The Royal Cape Yacht Club close to the Waterfront. Wesley Potts got the evening underway for the anticipated crowd with his own acoustic rendition of Travis McCoy’s “Billionaire” that has been getting big airplay on radio stations. He had lyrics like “Smiling next to Jerry it’s my dream” that got the crowd into hysterics. Wesley recently suffered a fracture to his neck earlier this year whilst bodyboarding at the Wedge in Plettenberg Bay and it was great to see him in such high spirits again. This was followed by the various divisions receiving their prizes for their respective placing’s on the day. The schools league was also presented, as well as the announcement of the Western Province Bodyboarding Team for 2010. Every rider that will represent Western Province at this year’s much anticipated SA Champs was presented with their WPBA Blazers. Angus Houston was proud to represent on his son’s behalf, Jared ‘Jerry’ Houston, who has had a phenomenal rookie year on the World Tour, and offered some words of encouragement to the riders. There are a few new names that will be representing the team this year and the elation on their faces could be clearly seen.

Supper was then to be served and consisted of a mouth-wateringly delicious buffet of chicken and roast beef with an assortment of fresh vegetables, supplemented with scrumptious roast potatoes. After that dessert proved to be a hit, especially amongst some of the grom’s, who made sure they got seconds of the ice-cream and chocolate sauce that was on offer. All in attendance can agree that Western Province Bodyboarding is going to be a force to be reckoned with this year and if the team spirit is anything to go by then the team is likely to achieve their goal of bringing back the “Fishman Trophy”. WPBA would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to Jen Koopmans for her fantastic support of managing the team as well as the team’s chairman, Deon Meyer. WPBA would again also like to thank Sport Unlimited for their continued support of the team and for helping make the 2010 Western Province Bodyboarding Champs such a success.
