CKZN Inter-Schools Contest

posted by Sean Tickner on 6th April 2008

The CKZN Schools Bodyboarding Contest was held over the 15th and 16th March. The format consisted of 5 Junior Riders (grades 6-8) and 5 Senior Riders (grades 9-10) from 8 different schools in the region battling it out for School and Individual honours.

We were blessed with a forecasted swell that saw some grinding barrels on the banks of North Beach and the first heats in the water were the Juniors. Paddling out to the fun bowl wave breaking next to the pier, the guys made the most of the testing conditions. It was a great learning experience as many of the younger guys had never ridden a contest before and were more than eager to represent their schools and have a good time in general.

After the Juniors were done, it was the turn of the Senior Riders, with some well known faces such as Iain Campbell and Adam Waites battling it out. The Saturday was dedicated to the team event with riders scoring points for their Schools and everyone getting a chance to ride.

Overall, it was a good day of riding and the Boys all went home to recover for the next days Individual Contest knowing that they’d done their schools proud.

Sunday was a touch smaller on the swell side but still pumping. The scores had been tabulated from the day before and the Top 16 riders in each division were sent into the water to take home Individual glory. The Juniors were in first again and the guys put in all their effort to get the best waves and highest scores, with standouts including Robbie Waites, Matthew Oberholzer and Stephen Du Preez.

The Seniors went at it again, with some of the more experienced Riders venturing out to the Outside Banks and upping their wave scores. It was a great day, with schoolfriends, parents and general supporters all cheering the Riders on.

The Juniors Final saw Robbie Waites, Matthew Oberholzer, Stephen Du Preez and Brendon Muller going for glory and putting it all on the line. Junior Honours went to the experienced Robbie Waites.

After a solid performance by the Younger guys, the Seniors had to step up to the plate and show everyone how it was done. The Finalists were Iain Campbell, Connor Pullen, H Plumstead and Adam Waites. There was still some swell lurking on the outside Banks and the Seniors decided to try their luck and hopefully link a few waves through to the bowl. Iain Campbell and Adam Waites again showed their competitive experience by getting a couple solid scoring rides on the outside.

Once the dust had settled, Iain Campbell came out with the victory with Adam Waites a close second and Connor Pullen and H Plumstead coming in 3rd and 4th respectively.

Overall School Honours went to Durban High School followed by Grosvenor High School, Northwood High School and Kuswag High School.
It was a great weekend and the schools were well represented by some good up and coming riders, hopefully we’ll get to see them all riding in the CKZN Trials coming up near the end of the month.
