Blowout Bodyboarding Club Contest #2

Blowout Bodyboarding Club had a contest at Margate last Sunday in what can only be described as very difficult conditions. Waves in excess of 7ft broke quite far out and were accompanied by an extremely strong and dangerous rip current. Only 25 competitors entered to the usual 40 or 50, but this certainly did not cause any lack of serious entertainment. It was clear from observing the 1st couple of heats that it was going to be a long difficult day of competition. Some entrants got taken by the current and ended up paddling most of their heats to safety. It wasn't all bad in the end as some awesome and high scoring rides were recorded in various divisions.
Derek Footit, who is no stranger to big out of control surf, proved once again his dominance in the bodyboarding world by taking the Pro and DK titles. All eyes were actually more on Alistair Taylor as he has a huge reputation to do go for outrageous manoeuvres in stupefying surf. Alistair had to settle for a well deserved 2nd. In the Junior division Dune Barker proved that even if you come last in your opening heat, it doesn't mean it's over. Dune's cool head and solid performance earned him the top spot in this hotly contested division. Boys rider Michael Bowie looked surprisingly comfortable in the monstrous surf. He ended up winning his junior heat with a massive looping air-roll. Unfortunately he couldn't keep it together for his 2nd heat. It didn't seem to phase him though as his actual division is the Boys division which he won quite comfortably.
Blowout would like to thank all the totalisers, judges, parents and spectators who braved the blistering heat and tough conditions to make this contest a success.
The following Blowout contest will only be towards the end of May due to the up and coming SN Trials and the Margate Wimpy-Rossi Pro-Am.
