WPBA Trial 1 - Results

posted by Gareth White on 18th February 2008

The Western Province Bodyboarding Association (WPBA), held the first in a series of four provincial trials this past weekend, 17 February, in incredible surf at The Hoek in Noordhoek.

On a day where most Capetonians struggled against a blustery South Easter, organisers of the event were blessed with near perfect 4 to 6 foot swell, which was hollowed out by the wind, creating cavernous barrels and setting-the-stage for some spectacular riding.

To begin the days proceedings the Boys Division, took to the surging seas, putting on a solid display of their abilities. The Ladies Division, were next in line with current South African Ladies Champion, Pamela Bowren from Stellenbosch, setting the early pace by riding the biggest waves and performing a number of high risk manoeuvres that had many holding their breath.

Next up was the Juniors Division, whose participants tested their metal, going head to head as if war had been declared. The division boasts some of South Africa’s most talented young riders, whose competitive hunger provided onlookers with an amazing display of youthful agility. Stand out performances came from, Jason Selby from Blouberg, Andrew Raath from Melkbosstrand and Jonathan Mellish from Somerset West.

Later the Pro Division produced some rather sensational highlights including a spectacular Reverse Air performed by Pro Division newcomer, Jared Houston from Blouberg. Other riders to catch the attention of the crowd were Daniel Worsley from Table View and Jonathan Maritz from Fish Hoek.

In the Drop Knee Division riders found conditions tough during their heat as they were held during peak high tide - not a favourable time to be surfing at The Hoek because the spot provides its best waves during low tide. There were considerable lulls throughout the heats and very few riders were able to properly showcase their talent. Those that stood out were, Vaughn Harris from Gardens, Ian Kruger from Plattekloof and Robert Starke from Durbanville.

Judging from the positive feedback I received, all are looking forward to the next WPBA trial which will be held on, 1-2 March 2008.

In future the WPBA will probably have to run certain divisions on the Saturday of each trial weekend because as a result of the number of entrants the WPBA will be unable to run the contest in one day.

The WPBA would like to say a big WELCOME all of its new members, thank you very much for considering riding for our association...we hope you had a good time yesterday and we look forward to seeing you soon!
