The South African Bodyboarding Association (SABA), have announced the squad from which a team will be chosen to represent South Africa at the World Surfing Games due to take place in Portugal next October.

The squad was announced at the 21st Annual South African Bodyboarding Championships prize-giving and consists of some of South Africa’s finest riders.
The riders were selected based on their performances at SA Champs and from a vote cast by each Provinces participating at SA’s, as to who they felt would be able to bring home gold in the bodyboarding division.

Currently the squad comprises of 10 male and 2 female riders, with SABA awaiting confirmation of availability from a yet to be named third female rider.

The squad is as follows:-

Male riders:

Now that they have been selected riders will be put to the test in two trials due to take place during the running of next years Cape Classic and Wimpy Rossi Pro Am. The trials will be conducted together with The Stellenbosch Sports Science Institute, who will be on hand to test riders by putting them through a series of core tests.

“I am confident that the best will shine through - The trials will be gruelling and the riders will be tested not only on their riding ability but also their fitness,” commented SABA Chairperson, Sally Mellish on the selection process.

From this squad, 4 male and 2 female bodyboarders will be chosen to attend the Surf South Africa training camps, where the ultimate 2 male riders and 1 female rider will be chosen by The Surf South Africa selectors to represent South Africa at the World Surfing Games.

As of yet there has been no official press release from the International Surfing Association regarding the event, when I do find out I will update as soon as possible.

SABA would like to congratulate the riders and wish them the best of luck.
