The Western Province Bodyboarding Association, sponsored by Sport Unlimited, hosted their 3rd Provincial Trial this past Sunday the 10th of June at Witsands, near Kommetjie.

Despite weather being a little rough the Trial was completed flawlessly.
A big thank you has to go to organisers, totalisers, judges and all involved with this event for sticking it out and seeing this one through.

As a result of this past week’s weather, conditions weren’t great. Seas were a stormy 3-4 foot, wind was fresh out of the North West and there was the occasional patter of rain to keep us cold. Competitors found it tough to deal with the constant rip-currents pulling them out of the competition area and once again wave selection was the key to winning heats.

Although conditions were tough Witsands did produce some bombs, with the odd bowling, blow-out barrel begging to be ridden.

Fresh from his travels abroad and just as amped as ever, Sacha Specker arrived on the scene and made his presence known with convincing rides in both the Pro and DK Divisions.

The Ladies kicked off the day, with good performance from Pamela Bowren, who landed a sick Roll in a heaving shorey-that had the guys cheering.

For me the performance of the day has to go to Chris Elliot for his win in the toughest Pro-Division heat. The heat was, as Chris put it, “a star studded line-up,” featuring the likes of Ian Kruger, Sacha Specker, Vaughn Harris and Daniel Worsley-if I’m not mistaken. Elliot-who also competes in the Juniors Division, had to dig deep into his bag-of-tricks to pull this one off, and sealed victory by landing two Air-Roll-Spins.

Elliot also did rather well in the Juniors Division, pulling off a sick Invert and following it up by catching set waves and combining maneuvers. Others riders who did well were, Aden Kleve, Jared Houston, Jared Johnson and Johnathan Mellish.

Our DK riders are quite a formidable force and competition is tough, as the Division boasts some of the biggest names in our sport.
There were two stand-out performances from this weekend.
Like I said, Specker made his presence felt with a big DK floater, only to be topped by Daniel Worsley’s World-Class, shorey-smashing floater in the last DK heat.
Robert Starke deserves a mention for his “I like playing in big fish territory,” antics in the back-line and his “I heard they like orange fins,” comment.

The Men’s division saw, former Border Pro-Rider, Jan-Michael Lutzeuer pull-off some awesome Inverts to seal victory in his opening heat. Other top rides came from the ever present JP Nortier, Jamie Higgins and Peter Lambert-who risked it all and played “shark-bait” out in the back-line.

In the Boys Division riders found it tough to deal with the amount of water movement and many struggled to push through the relentless shore-break. Once again stand-out performances came from Jason Selby and Bas Koopmans. A big-shout-out has to go to Josh Chigome for taking endless grom torment from the older guys-well done boyo.
We had some laughs-Good Times!

No Masters Division heats took place at the Trial-those will be run during the coming events.

WPBA would like to thank our sponsors, Sport Unlimited for their continued support.
