The South African Bodyboarding Association (SABA) will once again be backing this year's Wedge Classic bodyboarding event which will be held at the Wedge in Plettenberg Bay from July 10 to 14, 2007. The twelfth annual SABA Wedge Classic is the longest running bodyboarding event in South African history. The SABA Wedge Classic is also supported by Bitou tourism - they will be providing beach activities to keep the whole family entertained.

"The SABA Wedge Classic is the longest running South African bodyboarding event thanks to our sponsors who have been supporting us right from the start. Having grown up in Plett I never imagined that this event would grow with such enormity. Now my biggest dream is that the event becomes a world tour event. Plett is a beautiful town that has everything right at your doorstep," commented event organiser Wayne Craig from Wave Crest Distributors.

The 4A rated SABA Wedge Classic will be the fourth event on the national circuit which counts towards the crowning of the year end champions. Spectators can look out for the likes of Sacha Specker, Al Taylor, and Sampi Kamffer who will be competing amongst South Africa's finest bodyboarders. These top contenders will be battling it out for valuable SABA points as well as the generous prize money.

Thanks to First National Bank, Robberg Seafood and Ocean Life the prize purse totals an impressive R16,000 which will once again be divided amongst the Pro division, Ladies and Drop Knee riders. Hence the Pro division can look forward to prize money of R 10,000, while the drop knee division wins R3, 900 and the Ladies division will be awarded R 2,300.

The contest will follow the same format as last year due to the immense success of last year's experimental format. However this year riders who compete in the Pro division in addition to their usual division, will receive full SABA ratings points for their results in both divisions making the event that much more competitive and lending even more value to the 4A ratings points.

Riders will be given the opportunity to compete in the Pro division, as well as the Drop Knee division, without jeopardizing their competing in their regular division, be it boys, juniors, ladies or whatever they normally compete in. Only one SABA membership fee is applied to entrants however a rider must pay for each division entry fee in full in order to be able to compete in multiple divisions. The only exception will be the Development division which will only be open to upcoming riders; the development riders won't be permitted to ride in any other division.

The deadline for entries is fast approaching and to avoid losing out bodyboarders are encouraged to enter as soon as possible because "D-day" is July 4. After this date no late entries will be accepted. Entry forms will be available from www.sixty40.co.za alternatively interested bodyboarders can e-mail [email protected]

The SABA Wedge Classic is grateful to their loyal sponsors which are First National Bank, Robberg Seafoods, Custom X, LMNOP, Beyond Coastal, Ocean Life for their ongoing support.
