Kalk Bay Shootout Club Contest

posted by Ian Thurtell on 12th October 2006

Arriving in the Parking lot at 5:45am, we were greeted with a super glassy 3ft swell. The tide was high but was dropping all morning so the call was made to run the contest.

With everyone arriving in the Parking lot by 7:15am, we waited to see what the tide was going to do to the swell, some of the riders paddled out to get some fun waves before the start. A few solid waves kept pouring through and the riders in the water showed they were easily contestible...

The early heats of Round 1 had real fun clean waves and 3 of the 5 Round 1 heats were surfed untill a unanimous decision was made to hold the contest off untill the tide had pushed abit. The waves by this stage were sucking dry off the reef.

During the 1:30 hour wait everyone chilled out and was kept intertained, including the local residents, by Donovan Basset who was going mad on the loud speaker!

A few sets started breaking cleaner so heat 4 of Round 1 paddled out..Just as the tide started pushing, a light onshore started blowing which made the waves smaller but the riders didnt seemed fazed and went about boosting solid moves to keep the compitition close.

With Round 1 completed, Round 2 got underway with all the riders knowing what they had to do to improve on their total score.
A few of the standouts of Round 2 were: Johnny "i'll take it" Maritz who scored a crazy 40.5 in Round 1 and 35.5 in Round 2! These were the two top scores of the whole contest.
Josh Kleve and JP Nortier also surfed consistantly to get good scores down on the scoresheets.
In Round 2, Ian Kruger managed to find a righthander that boosted him into a solid flip but needed a second wave to back it up...

It seems that in the end, Local knowledge helped in the conditions and Johnny Maritz walked away the winner with Josh Kleve and JP Nortier in 2nd and 3rd respectivly.

A big thanks must go out to our sponsors, PI Bodyboards and Sport Unlimited, who gave away prizes to the finalists,
