Hey all
The day dawned to a solid four feet of swell hitting the town beaches, the calls were made, the riders rocked up and the first club comp of 2006 was on!!!!!!!!!
The riders in question were Sacha Specker, Rob Starke, Jared Houston, Olivier Etchebers, Steve Polinski and Simon Hagen. Small, but this was all that was needed to run this kind of format.
After much deliberation it was decided to make the trip up to gas chambers, which if you don’t know is regarded as one of the heaviest breaks in Cape Town. The drive and the walk (all 45 minutes of it) were pretty uneventful, but, upon arrival we were greeted with solid 4-6 ft Waimea style bombs colliding with shallow banks.
We waited no time changing into our suits and the first heat was up: Jared, Steve and Olivier. Steve and Olivier could not get their hands on the sick ones so it was Jared who emerged the winner with a decent invert. Heat two consisted of Rob, Sacha and Simon. Rob took this heat by a ball hair with a large invert and a sick flip, Sacha with a solid ARS and an invert and Simon unfortunately not finding the waves suited the DK stance..
Round two. Jared came out on top again with another invert but this time Olivier putting up a good fight with some sick combos. In the second heat Rob was killing it, until Sacha the beast came around and threw down an absolutely fat invert off a solid closeout.
Now the way the comp works is that after everyone has surfed twice the two top scores are tallied and the final results taken out of 20 points. Final results are:
1. Sacha Specker - 18.5 pts
2. Rob Starke – 17 pts
3. Jared Houston – 15 pts
4. Olivier Etchebers – 13 pts
5. Steve Polinski - 11.5 pts
6. Simon Hagen - 4.5 pts
So Spex was the deserving champ of the first of the best comps ever to take place in SA and walked with the sum of the entry fees paid by all six contestants. I fail maths at school so you can work out what R30 x 6 is! But all in all it was a sick day that everyone enjoyed. Viva la boogie…
