Stage Set Today for Epic Bodyboarding Showdown at Wedge

posted by Olivia Jones on 8th July 2005

With clean one metre (3ft) offshore surf conditions and flawless weather complete with whales and seagulls the stage has been set for an epic SABA Wedge Classic bodyboarding showdown at the Wedge in Plettenberg Bay.

First National Bank (FNB) has put up a generous R10 000 cash prize purse for the Pro division and R3 000 cash for the Women.

“The weather has been fantastic the last few days and looks even better today with clear skies, fun waves, great music and guaranteed good times. The standard of bodyboarding is going to be really good especially in the ladies final so come down to the beach to check out the action,” said event organiser and competitor Wayne Craig from Wave Crest Distributors (WCD); Craig was forced to withdraw from the event due to an ankle injury.

Carrying a whopping 5A rating the event has attracted a record number of over 200 entries from the cream of the SA crop as well as a handful of international riders. In a string of early round upsets all of the international riders were eliminated, including former US Champion Alistair Taylor which pays testament to the exceptional standard of SA bodyboarding.

Wedge locals Marc Jucker and Samuel Kamffer have earned their place in the Pro semi-finals. Event standout in the Pro division, Daniel Worsley (CT), has been dominating his heats but will need to keep this momentum through to the finals which will take place after 11h00 today.

Another local rider to impress was Lyndal Pells who won her heat on Thursday with a series of rolls. Pells and former world champion Karla Costa Taylor (Brz) will be the ones to beat in this division especially as Pels has the upper hand of local knowledge and is out to maker her sponsors, WCD, proud.

All media are invited to attend the event and the SABA Wedge Classic prize giving which takes place tonight (Friday 8 July) at 7pm at Cool Bananas with an after party for the over 18’s which takes place at VIP.

Plettenberg Bay is proud to host the 11th annual SABA Wedge Classic which boasts prizes to the value of R25 000.

The SABA Wedge Classic is the fourth event on the national circuit which counts towards the crowning of the year end champions in the Pro, Boys, Juniors, Men, Women, Masters, Drop knee, Under 12 boys, Under 16 girls and Development divisions.

SABA and WCD (Wayne Craig and Steve Polinski) would like to thank the following sponsors who have contributed to the success of the event - Arnette Sunglasses, Reef Wetsuits, Reef Brazil, Red Bull and Cool Bananas .
