Southern Cape Champs were held on the 28th & 29th of August 2004 at Outerpool in Mossel Bay. The waves were really small on both days, which meant wave selection was crucial. Despite the small conditions there were still some good rides. With a crew of Western Province riders and Mark McCarthy from Zululand competing, there was strong field of competitors in the contest.

The format used at SA Champs was used at the contest, so everyone surfed two heats with the top 8 or 4 riders progressing to the next semis or finals. There was some excellent riding in all the round-robin heats and semi-finals.

In the development final there was an excellent riding, you can hardly believe these guys were only bodyboarding for a year at most. There was a tight contest between Rudi Second and Jordaan van der Merwe, but it was Rudi who took the title. Ryno van der Westhuizen and newcomer Aaron Combrinck placed 3rd and 4th respectively.

There weren’t many good waves that came through in the Boys final. Adam took the win with a couple of ARS’s on the inside waves. Jared Housten from Cape Town had a couple of good heats earlier in the contest; he also beat Vaughn Harris in his round 1 Pro heat. He could only get second in the boys final though. Jason Pike surfed well to make finals and still managed to get a 3rd place. Emile Maree couldn’t find any good waves and had to settle for 4th.

The waves were a bit more dropknee friendly. There were some big carves and nice floaters by all the dropknee finalists. Mark McCarthy ripped it up and took first, with Vaughn in second. Ishmael Grant for Cape Town took 3rd and Adam Morley place 4th.

The ocean went almost totally flat in the Junior final. The riders improvised though and it ended up being a tight heat. Michael Meyer took the win, followed by Matthew Botha, who rode well throughout the contest. Marcel Nel, who won his Round 1 & 2 heats, took 3rd. Adam Morley ended with a 4th place.

Adam Morley dominated the Pro final though. He landed two good ARS’s, which were the only big moves in the heat. Vaughn also surfed well, but could only managed a 2nd in the small conditions. Aadam Grant came in third and Brett Eriksen got a 4th place.

There were few other rewards as well:
MOST IMPROVED RIDER: Jordaan van der Merwe
BEST WAVE: Vaughn Harris (scored an average of 9.5 in the pro semi final for sick a Air Reverse)
Michael Meyer received a reward for his efforts in development in the province.

A big thanks goes out to all the following people:
Michael Sheppard of Waves surf shop in Mossel Bay for all the Prize Vouchers.
Albert Wiffen of Delfino’s Restaurant for supplying the officials with food.
Michael Meyer for making the certificates for all the finalists.
Aadam & Ishmael Grant for bringing a couple of Western Province riders two the contest. (Jared Housten, Gunter Muller, Stuart Lee and Mark McCarthy).
