WP riders compete with Cape Doctor at first trial

posted by Damon Crawford on 23rd February 2010

Western Province Bodyboarding's first trial got underway this past Sunday the 21st of February at Glen Beach in the posh Atlantic Seaboard suburb of Camps Bay.

Contestants were stoked to see near perfect 2 to 3 foot right-handers peeling off down the neatly formed sand banks. The South Easter did its best to interfere with the proceedings and unfortunately eventually got its way in the early afternoon. This forced the postponement of a couple of rounds, but not before some epic riding went down resulting in some high heat scores.

It was great to welcome new faces too and it is clearly evident that the Juniors' division is going to be a hot one to watch this year.

First underway were the boys who had to contend with some pounding surf. Ian Viljoen, Ethan Koopmans and Wilder Shultz all dominated their respective heats with Wilder fully owning both his round one and round two heats.

Next up saw the juniors enter the line-up with a dropping tide that had cleaned up the sets well. Both Fowlers rode well as well as great scores coming from Chris Joubert, Josh Stanley, Selby, Connor Eastment and Corban Warrington. Andrew "Froth" Raath surfed neatly in and out the pocket to put himself into a good position going into the next trial.

A buzz went around when the WP Ladies Champ Janneke De Kock arrived to surf her heats. Rumour was abound that she may not have surfed this year but all contestants were shown otherwise and paid close attention possibly learning a thing or two as she put together combo ride after combo ride. Although being the only lady competing she showed she has what it takes to do well again at Champs this year with her neat and powerful move execution.

Mens saw a great return to the competitive side of bodyboarding for both Yeager Starke and Josh Kleve.

Robert Scott is in charge of the Masters and Simon Heale and Wesley Potts both scored well in their Pro heats.

Thanks to everyone for a great day of competition riding and for the beach support from those that attended the event.
