North Beach Club Contest #1 2008

The first North Beach Club Contest, sponsored by Bad Boy, Bad Girl, Hot Buttered and GOTCHA, kicked off with a bang on Sunday 24th Feb with the contest being held in very trying conditions. After a decision was made to move the contest venue from North Beach to South Beach due to the large Cyclone swell that was pounding the Durban Beaches, the guys were ready to tackle 4-6ft beachbreak conditions.
The weather was perfect and the light cross/onshore wind didn't seem to do much to the solid swell that was running throughout the day. We started with the U20 Division heading out and it was made abundantly clear to everyone watching that it was going to be a good day of competition. The conditions became even more trying as the tide went out and the banks showed no mercy. A few riders were getting caught on the inside and receiving some solid beat-downs followed by a long paddle or a run up the beach.
It was a great day of competition in some very contestable conditions and it was great seeing the guys pushing themselves in the surf, going for broke and busting out.
Some stand-outs of the day were Iain Campbell, who surfed in 3 divisions and made the finals for all of them, winning both Pro and U20 and coming 3rd in DK. We also had a relatively unknown rider, Warren Van Der Merwe who made it to the U20 Finals after getting through some tough heats. Michael “Ratt” Ostler also rode well in the DK Division, making it through to the Finals in some difficult conditions.
Well done and thank you to all the riders, families and supporters who made it down and cheered everyone on as they surfed. The competitors all rode well and it was a good start to the competitive season, hopefully we get to see some more up and coming riders and we get to help push our sport to new levels. After seeing some of the guys riding today, we’re heading in the right direction.
