Day one of the 4A rated Wedge Classic, the 4th stop on the South African Bodyboarding Association’s national circuit, being run in the holiday resort town of Plettenberg Bay, was a virtual bodyboarder's paradise, as contestants were greeted with flawless 3ft peaky and hollow surf. The conditions were perfect for bodyboarders to display the very manoeuvers they are best known for performing, with huge air rolls, deep barrel rides and air roll spins the order of the day. The high level of performance on day one bodes well for the remaining 4 days of the contest, as the top seeded riders begin to compete, and the forecasts indicate an increase in swell size starting Thursday.

Some of the standout performances on day one were Andrew Raath (Cape Town), a boys U14 competitor, winning his heat in round 1 of the Pro division. Terence Pieters (Margate) and Cobus Oosthuizen were also putting on polished performances, and local boy Sampi Kamffer showed the depth of his local knowledge, winning his heat convincingly. Aden Kleve (Kommetjie, CT), a junior contestant, launched one of the biggest moves of the day, a massive inverted aerial. One of the biggest upsets of the day was the early elimination of 2005 Wedge Classic Pro champion and local expert, Marc Jucker.

The 2007 Wedge Classic is the 11th annual running of the contest, and is proudly presented by FNB, Wave Crest Distribution, Debis Fleet Management, Robberg FineFoods, Red Bull and The Surf Shop in Plettenberg bay. The contest runs until July 14.
