SA Champs Day 1

The event got off to a great start with the development riders showing their best performances and letting the rest of the bodyboarding community know what quality riders the sport can look forward to in the years to come.

Boys (U12) were the next to enter the water. With the North- Easterly blowing it made the surf small and rough, but the guys were on top form, busting some perfect rolls and solid spins in less then desirable surf making the waves look good! Murray Van Vuuren (EP) Sebastian Koopmans (WP) won their respective heats.

Once the Boys Division had entered the water it was a matter of time until the South- Westerly started to blow and the waves started to take a better shape, bringing up the level of bodyboarding in the water and creating a real show for the crowd on the beach. However it was also the South- Westerly that would cause the early postponement of the day’s events later on. Aden Kleve (WP) and Terence Pieters(SKZN) were on top form and pushing their limits in winning thier respective heats. The upset for the day was when young CKZN hopeful Ian Cambell placed 3rd in his heat, he will be working hard to try and shake off that low score in his later heats.

Juniors were the last to enter the water. With the South- Westerly really starting to power through by this stage, the surf was becoming very difficult to read and the competitors had to trust their gut instinct for where the waves were gong to come from next. Even with the wind and sand blowing away the crowd, the teams stayed and rooted their fellow team mates on, hooting and shouting when their team mates were busting big air rolls and pushing some big air reverses off the sections. The battle is on for the CKZN and SKZN teams as they look to be dominating the junior division.

A sudden decision by the team managers and organizers to call off the event was called made directly after the Juniors final heat of the day, due to the wind blowing the tower- not to mention all the officials inside- a bit too hard for the organizers liking. This did not stop some of the guys going out for a free surf to let off some steam built up during the days competition.

The postponement will mean that the remainder of the divisions that were scheduled for the day will begin first tomorrow. Beginning at 7:30 am with the Mens, Masters and Girls U16, and then into the days scheduled divisions of Drop Knee and Pro.
