This shot was taken at last years Pipe contest.

When judging a contest at Pipe judges are primarily looking for barrels, if accompanied by maneuvers (out the barreling section) this will reinforce your score.

I watched this year’s contest which was held in January via live webcast with live scores and the way judges awarded scores were nothing like over here.. After all it is Pipe so no really huge surprises there..

For example; if a rider takes off, inside first reef on a good sized wave, bottom turns the section, but the wave decides not to throw a barrel, the rider races passed the foaming section and pulls a clean ARS off the end section, getting a substantial amount of air, he will only be awarded something like 3.0 – 3.8 for this ride. The reason for the low score is because even though the rider executed a clean some what ‘high risk’ maneuver, he failed to get any time in the barrel.

I can only guess that this judging approach is in an effort to minimize groveling and encourage riders to go bigger.

Judging depends on a lot more than just the bust.
Firstly the scale for judging a heat is set by the first solid ride in the heat. Once the scale has been set judges compare rides to one another...which one was better. Wave selection(sets score higher), Deeper bottom turn, smooth line, good timing, well executed bust, is the move performed on the most critical section of the wave?, smooth rotation of the move, clean landing and rider showing that s/he is in full control after landing the move-not getting caught in the foam and bailing before coming out. If this guy took off deep on one of the sets, got a bit of a barrel and launched this boost out of the pit and landed smoothly...he would score highly-no doubt!...judging is all about comparrison, having good recall is paramount to good judging.
